School reading levels - Year 1

Can someone please help! I'm so confused by reading levels. I've searched passed posts but they don't factor in lockdown etc.

What reading level / biff and chip books are your Year 1 kids on?

I know I shouldn't compare but I just want to have some idea because it seems like my kid is really far behind where they should be.

The teacher said that if they were on level 3 at this point then they'd be ahead, but that doesn't seem to correlate with any of the charts or anything that I've seen.

Please help, feeling a bit stressed about it all!

home.oxfordowl.co.uk/reading/reading-schemes-oxford-levels/oxford-reading-tree-levels/

Does the above link help?

I have three kids and at that age they were all at different levels. One of them could barely read at all. They can all read just fine now so try not to worry.

Thank you for replying, that's the one I've looked at before. Some books he's sent home with are red and reads them so easily, other ones are oxford reading tree 2b and they seem slightly more detailed. But red is way below where he should be I'm guessing. I've tried him on slightly harder ones at home and he just looses focus. But the ones he's getting from school he seems to race through.

There’s a current thread on this subject on the primary education board. Basically there are children on all different levels and some suddenly have a burst of ability and catch up etc so don’t worry too much, unless the teacher has concerns.

Op, each child as pp pointed out learns differently but you must absolutely be on top of it. Has he made steady reading progress, does he know his phonics.. Can he remember high frequency words. Hfw.

He does have some stamina to read? I would support him with Hfw, first 100 word flashcards.. Both my dc, one a avid reader, one not, both really enjoyed Flash cards.

How many school books do you get access to?

Make him do at least a few pages each night, bribe if you have too.
. It's a crucial stage in reading and all learning comes from it. Obviously don't drive him off it but if he loves tablet or x box.. And has a set time.. Bribe him.. 2 pages for an extra 10 mins ext.

I've learned the hard way not to leave things to chance at all.. And throw everything at it.

My dd was stage 6 in march year 2. Struggling badly to read... Lock down saved us. I signed up to reading scheme and moved dd along it... They will have the same books your ds has. Our school couldn't give any books out in lock down and now can only give out 2 a week. Through the reading scheme she gets access to 6 per week and with school we read about 4 per week. In lock down 1 a day...

I used anything and everything to bribe her... And now she's nealry a few weeks reader... I also did flash cards etc...

Op just to contradict the post above, unfortunately we can't rely on teachers for many reasons to point out concerns.
Just take up this baton yourself.

Our school cover up the levels because parents get too caught up in what level their child is on. As long as they are making progress I'm sure they'll be fine.

Teacher here.

Just to add, a lot of schools have reorganised their books and sorted them by phonic phases, so it could seem to jump around by levels but the phonic phases could be right for your child.

My own DC was unable to read until yr 2 but had all the pre-reading skills so I knew it would come. Not all children pick up phonics easily and not all teachers are able to teach reading using other strategies.

Ok thank you so much all for the feedback. I will continue supporting him at home without pushing it too much. I'll keep working on high frequency words etc.

So hard to know how much to push

My DD is in yr1 and is also bringing home red books that she seems to read quite easily now. We get one book per week and my DD is a reluctant reader. We are having a virtual parents evening soon so I'm going to bring it up then.
