Tenerife - would you go?

We are in Scotland and in a Tier 1 area that’s likely to remain as such for the rest of the year.

The only island we can fly to from near here is Tenerife and the flight times are good for travel with three under 5 - no crazy hours.

We plan to go in a month for two weeks (covering Xmas).

We are aware infections are rising a bit in Tenerife and curfews are being tightened a bit but it’s a lot more relaxed there than we have here at present. For now...

Whilst we don’t plan to book until last minute, I’d be interested to know if you’d allow yourself to get excited and start planning?

And has anyone on here been to Tenerife in the past four weeks or so and what’s it like?

TIA x

Join a Facebook page for Tenerife and you will see what is happening out there.
I think adults need a private test before you go.

I'm in Scotland. We have just moved from tier 3 from 2 and I think restrictions will only increase. I wouldn't personally. Maybe book a holiday cottage in your area as that's still ok even if your area goes up to a 3. I have had to cancel a holiday for next week (booked ages ago) due to our tier change on Friday and I only got vouchers back not money 😡 so I'm probably feeling overly cautious!

It won't be a tier 1 area for long if everyone has the same ideas as you.

I'd go.
But then I've got 8 easyJet vouchers burning a hole!
I think the only thing is, a lot of these holiday destinations are as dead as a dodo for obvious reasons so it might be a bit depressing.
Friends of mine went to Greece recently and were the only people in the hotel which opened for them only. Very kind of them but my friend said it was a bit weird!

If you have the money and the time off work then book it but factor in the extra cost of pcr tests and a really good travel insurance. What is your work situation? If you had to isolate on return would this be an issue ?
Make sure you book with a reputable atol agency , rather than a cheap online deal, because if it all goes pear shaped are you able to spend 4 hours on hold to a call centre on the other side of the world and potentially lose your money ?
These are all things you must consider. If all is ok then crack on . I would go .

EmmaStone · 15/11/2020 08:12

Probably not, for following reasons:

  • risk of needing to self isolate just before travel. Would be gutting to get close to travel and then someone in the family exhibit symptoms, or get contacted by test and trace.
  • not being much open when you get there. I don't think it would be warm enough for that not to be an issue (ie swimming outside, plenty of outdoor time), so it could be almost like being at home but with less to do.

I'm desperate to travel, I really am, but I just don't think the things I travel for would be much available at the moment.

I have no desire to catch a plane anywhere right now. Wearing a mask for the couple of hours in the airport, 4-5hrs for a flight to tbe canaries, then an hr at the other end doesnt sound that relaxing really. Generally i don't mind masks, but always find I a relief to remove it.

KodakNancyEurope · 15/11/2020 08:46

Thanks all

We can definitely manage to WFH - we have been doing it for months - and the children would miss maximum three days of school/nursery if things changed and we had to quarantine on return.

We would book with TUI and have established we could get private tests done and results back in time for travel.

The masks on a plane thing is off putting but I’m just interested to see if there are holiday makers out there now and that’s hard to gauge.

From what I can tell there’s lots of mask compliance from UK visitors but not so much other nations; that could be biased reporting though.

I really want to go, I know others who’ve holidayed off late travelling from London and have been fine. I just am canvassing for thoughtsvreally.

I have a friend in Tenerife right now at her holiday home. She said everywhere is very quiet.

I went to Italy the first week in October. Was lovely to get away but it wasn't the usual relaxing holiday due to mask wearing. But I'm still glad I did it.

I would go if you really want to. TUI have the covid promise where they won't take you anywhere you have to isolate on return. (Obviously they can't control rules changing while you're there).

Hi op . I have come off furlough back into the travel industry and I can tell you we are really busy . I had many families travel over the half term and enjoyed their holi, one family did go to tenerife but stayed in a large all inclusive resort they only went put one day in their own car hire to the mount tiede national park.
Every time I get an enquiry I make people aware of all the requirements and restrictions before I go any further just as not to waste anyone's time- theirs or mine !

Because the children are so young we would need AI to reduce the faff factor.

Good to hear there’s hope that the industry is picking up a bit

If you’re in a Tier 1 surely you’d need to travel to a Tier 3 to get flights, looking at where the Tier 1 areas are and where the airports are. You’re not supposed to travel into or out of a Tier 3/4 area so that alone would prevent you going.

That’s a good point but on this occasion incorrect.
