Steroid injection yesterday. Wine today. Mentally not good

Is this a thing? Bad combination.

Had major steroid injection in spine yesterday (prolapsed disc sciatica 5months). Wine this evening.

Started by feeling vvv irritated. Then depressed. Now sobbing for past hour.

Already on Sertraline for ptsd and depression.

Never felt like this before. Can't stop sobbing. Can't sleep.

You poor thing. I don’t know if it’s linked or not. Would make yourself something comforting like toast and hot chocolate as either try and sleep or listen to an audiobook to take your mind off it. I hope you are ok.

Sorry you are feeling so bad . I’ve no idea about alcohol and steroid injections but I do know steroids can make you very agitated especially in big doses. They can affect sleep too.
I sympathise, I’m up because I’ve upped my dose of anti depressant (fluoxetine ) and my usual night time dose seems not a good idea as I keep waking up and being unable to sleep in the early hours.

colouringindoors · 15/11/2020 02:59

Thank you both x

i think the alcohol may not have been the best idea.

can't believe its 3am and I'm wide awake and still sobbing

I think it’s much more likely to be the steroids by themselves than have anything to do with the wine. People on high-dose steroids can go through everything you’re describing, from the feelings of irritation to the uncontrollable crying (I went through it! On high-dose prednisone). I would imagine that wine could exacerbate those feelings, once the steroids cause them, but I haven’t heard of an interaction (maybe someone else will come on who has heard of one, though).

As @Gunpowder says, just try to take it easy and be very kind to yourself and do comforting things. Steroids can be a lifesaver, but the side effects can be just dreadful. As you’ve only had an injection and aren’t taking daily steroids, hopefully these feelings should “calm down” in a bit.

Thank you x sorry you had this too.

No-one gave me any warning, any nention of possible side effects. Feels really wrong!

Mood changes are a side effect of steroids. But you should report this to your healthcare provider as having happened as a Side effect. You’re not diabetic are you?

colouringindoors · 15/11/2020 03:16

no I'm not a diabetic thankfully.

will def be informing my GP. Really awful and quite frightening

I had a large steroid injection in my shoulder joint a few years ago and didn’t sleep the night following it. I didn’t have the mood swings but I certainly had the insomnia and slightly “wired” feeling for a few days

colouringindoors · 15/11/2020 13:13

i finally got to sleep around 4.
audio book did the truck thanks gunpowder horrible night

I’m glad you got to sleep in the end and I hope you are feeling brighter today. What a horrible side effect. I had no idea.

WhoAteAllTheDinosaurs · 15/11/2020 13:52

I remember feeling AWFUL after steroid injections in late pregnancy... anxious, irritable, couldn't sleep at all, jittery. I wasn't drinking at the time, but can imagine it wouldn't have helped. They do have side effects.
Hope you are feeling better today

colouringindoors · 15/11/2020 21:31

Thanks Dinosaurs sorry too... I've felt dreadful all day, really low, quite agitated. Not helped by fact it seems like a friend of my ds12 took her life this weekend SadSad

Oh god, that's awful SadSadSad

colouringindoors · 16/11/2020 12:36

Anyone able to advise how long these effects may last. Still feel dreadful, like my whole nody weighs 1000 tonnes, no energy or motivation to do anything

I had an injection in my toes, so I'm guessing not nearly as big a dose as you got. I felt out of sorts for a couple of days, quite agitated and irritated, was told to sit and rest my feet but just couldn't sit still. My feet were really sore too. By day 3 I felt much more like myself.

I had a great result from the injections, pain massively reduced, it was definitely worth it for me. Hang in there op.

somewheresorted · 16/11/2020 13:46

It’s quite unusual to get side effects from the injection, more the tablets that cause the issues, however, they can make the original condition worse for a few days and cause a flare.

I had an inter muscular steroid injection a few weeks back and certainly felt worse before I felt better but reaping the benefits now.

colouringindoors · 16/11/2020 13:55

Thanks Rae

hopefully not long...

Honestly couldn't tell you - mine was different injection obviously, but ended up getting admitted and having a c section a couple of days later which kind of overtook things. I definitely didn't sleep and felt jittery and anxious for a few days though (then baby was born).

colouringindoors · 18/11/2020 13:56

Feeling a lot better mentally today- hurrah! My sciatica and back pain I think are actually worse since the injection, better start improving soon!!!
