Anyone managed to stop night time jaw clenching?

I've got tinnitus and TMJD from clenching my teeth, mainly in my sleep but I've noticed I do it during the day too which I've made an effort to stop. Anyone managed to stop the night time jaw clenching?

My husband is training to be an osteopath and has significantly reduced the frequency that I jaw clench by treating me.

I'm seeing a dentist on Monday then osteopath was next on my list. What's the difference between them and a chiropractor though?

You need a splint. I’ve been in agony. Couldn’t even open my mouth.

The splint has transformed it.

I've had TMJ before and my GP prescribed amitriptyline which helped immensely even at a low dose (10 whatever unit)

No

I have a mouthguard that I put in every night, some of the time I wake up and I have taken it out during the night, my dentist said to carry on using it, because I could be taking it out just before I wake, equally I could be taking it out within an hour of falling asleep. Her point was that for whatever length of time it is in for it is better than nothing.

I have a mouth guard but find it very uncomfortable to sleep with and hardly ever bother. I also have tinnitus but never realised it was connected with teeth clenching.

I'm focusing on my jaw during the day to try and relax it ready for nighttime- stopped biting my nails, not resting my jaw on my hand, relaxing my jaw throughout the day

I have read that Botox can help. Might be worth some research (and you’ll have a lovely wrinkle free jaw Grin).

I have a mouth guard that was moulded to fit my teeth by my dentist; it has really helped. At one point I'd ground my teeth so much that my jaw froze and I couldn't eat anything.

AnathemaPulsifer · 14/11/2020 15:27

Physio helped me a lot. She massaged out the clenching muscles in my jaw and also helped me relax all the bigger muscles that were contributing.

Gingernaut · 14/11/2020 15:28

Nope.

I've cracked all the enamel on my teeth and chewed through four tooth guards.

I have a small guard which fits over my bottom teeth and it's replaced about once every three years.

Sometimes, I wake myself up because I can hear a strange squeaking noise.

It's me. Bouncing my teeth off the guard.

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/11/2020 15:42

Bouncing my teeth off the guard.
That's what I do! Mine is properly fitted from the dentist but I just try and chew it in my sleep.

MolotovMocktail · 14/11/2020 15:48

With botox in my masseters, yes. Only thing that worked to prevent the jaw ache and headaches from it. I get it done privately 3 times a year.

AWholeLottaRosie · 14/11/2020 16:24

Magnesium tablets stopped mine completely.

artisanparsnips · 14/11/2020 16:29

Yes, this hypnosis on YouTube stopped it for me. I listened to it every night as I went to sleep for a couple of weeks, and I go back to it if I am stressed.

flossletsfloss · 14/11/2020 16:44

The mouth guard didn't help me, it made it worse plus I would take it out in my sleep. It protects your teeth but doesn't stop you doing it. An Osteopath helped quite a bit but the thing that's helped me the most is learning what triggers it. Stress and lack of sleep are major triggers for me. Maxi dept at the hospital offered me antidepressants overnight to relax my jaw but I too do it during the day. Finding the trigger is the key to managing it. Good luck.

peridito · 14/11/2020 16:44

Is tinnitus really connected to jaw clenching ? I clench and I also have tinnitus but never thought of them being connected .

I think I've read that placing the tip of your tongue behind your top front teeth helps with day time clenching .

FeatherySquawkington · 14/11/2020 17:01

Well the clenching has caused the TMJD and the TMJD has caused the tinnitus, so in that respect clenching has caused the tinnitus.

I have both. The same as u. I have a proper mouth guard from the dentist as well.
One thing I do find is that if I sleep on my back I don’t clench my teeth as I sleep with my mouth open. Gravity I suppose. I just don’t stay there while I’m asleep as I turn on my side. But I do try.
I do the exercises that I found on you tube. But I have never found anything that will help.
Wake up with jaw ache , headache and I know how really sensitive teeth.
