Dull help please - food processors

My ancient food processor is almost dead. It’s an 80s brown/beige Kenwood that was my Grandma’s - she died in 1995 - so it owes me nothing.

I have my Mum’s Kenwood Chef with the jug blitzer thing that goes on top. I also have a hand held Brain stick blender with chopping attachment thingy and whisk (that was actually bought new by me rather than inherited!)

So I think my first question is whether I need a food processor or whether I can just get the extra bits to use with the chef - main things I use the processor for are pastry, cauliflower rice and chopping nuts!

If the answer is yes i need to replace it, would you recommend your food processor?

Thrilling for a Friday night I realise, but it’s marginally more interesting than Children In Need perhaps?!

This thread is quite old now, so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for the latest recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best food processor page with the top options tried, tested and loved by Mumsnetters. We hope it's helpful.

I've got a Kenwood chef that came with a food processor attachment, it has discs for slicing and grating and a blade for chopping. It might be possible to buy one to use with your chef.

Grin at Brain stick blender!

I have a food processor and a stick blender, and I use both. The food processor is much better for volumes of food if I'm chopping or dicing or grating. So yes, I'd definitely get one.

I have a Magimix. They don't make the one I have any more, but the one they do make is the one I wish I'd bought in the first place, as it has a wider feeding tube than mine.

If I was going to buy it again, I'd start here but obviously it depends on your budget!

I have a stick blender with a food processor attachment, it's impressive how powerful it is. It's a Braun. I gave away my Kenwood food processor, which was perfectly good, but once I had the Braun stick blender and tried the food processor attachment I had no more need for the Kenwood! Granted it only blitzes stuff but does it really well.

If I need a really high-end processor with different slicing/chopping blades, I'll probably get an attachment for my KitchenAid.

@NannyR does it attach onto the top or the underneath bit? I’ll dig out the paperwork and check what model it is, thank you Smile.

@BIWI Grin I spotted it after I’d posted. Although I often feel that my brain has been blended these days Confused. I’ll start looking at the Magimixes - budget may not be a huge issue as my Mum is desperate to treat me for various reasons! Thank you Smile

@Yippeeforme I use the stick blender most for soups etc, I just blitz them in the pan and the food processor bit is fine for small bits like herbs or breadcrumbs but I think I do need something that does bigger volumes. I guess the KitchenAid works in a similar way to the Chef so it’s interesting that you’d get the attachments for that. Thanks Smile

It attaches on top, my chef has two attachment points on top - a fast one on the right for the blender jug and grinder attachments and a slower one on the left for the processor.

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/11/2020 22:54

I have a Kenwood Chef and looked at the food processor attachment, but it was quite expensive. I bought a cheap Kenwood food processor which does all of the stuff the Chef doesn't. It does mean I have 2 appliances, but hey they do different things!

I still use my hand blender for soups btw.......

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/11/2020 23:00

I have a stick blender from Asda that does for soup in the pot .

And recently got a KitchenAid 3.1 litre Food Processor in Onyx which is a thing of beauty and a great workhorse .
There's a 4 litre one too but that would be huuge

I’ve just got a magimic and it is brilliant. I like that it has 3 different size bowls depending on what I’m making. It’s also very quiet.

I do have a kitchen aid stand mixer but the food processor attachment didn’t look as good as a standalone one.

ShivD · 13/11/2020 23:17

Magimix even! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Darklane · 13/11/2020 23:20

I have a pretty old Braun food processor but it never comes out of the cupboard since I bought a small Ninja one that came with two jug type bases, one smaller than the other. It’s quick to get out & use & a doddle to clean.
I also have an old stick one that it rarely use now.

Wincarnis · 13/11/2020 23:37

I have a kenwood chef and a kitchen aid standalone food processor (which isn’t very good) and I wish I had the kenwood food processor attachment instead, would be more convenient. The kitchen aid food processor is very heavy and noisy, the central spindle has melted twice.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 13/11/2020 23:43

I’ve got this one www.johnlewis.com/magimix-compact-3200-food-processor/white/p2237414
It’s absolutely brilliant, very powerful and lots of different blades. I do use a stick blender for soup though.

NewToRenting · 21/11/2020 14:22

@Vanillaspicecandle - sounds like what I need. Would it do all these functions: making heavy dough, milkshakes (including crushing ice), small/ large quantity curry pastes/ chutneys, spice grinding plus all the usual food processor functions (grating, chopping/ slicing etc)? If so, it's a dream come true!

thegirlwithkaleidoscopeeyes · 06/01/2021 11:51

Just in case you care, my Mum got me the attachment for the chef and it was used last night did the first time. Volume seems similar to the ancient food processor and it did what I needed it to do so a thumbs up so far from me Grin
