Hotel chocolat velvetiser

Quick question before I treat myself. The thing I hate with powdered hot chocolate is that it separates so quickly so you constantly have to stir it or you end up with 3/4 of brown yuckiness and the bottom is a brown sludgy chocolate lump. Does the velvetiser keep the chocolate in suspension better?

Yes, but that's partly because it uses pure grated chocolate, not powder.

Feawen · 13/11/2020 09:16

Yes! No longer is hot chocolate a few tasty sips followed by disappointment. It melts and whisks the grated chocolate into the milk, so there are no powdery bits left over.

I have read that the Dualit milk frother does the same thing without the price tag.

motherstongue · 13/11/2020 09:16

Would recommend it. You can use any kind of chocolate gratings, you don’t need to buy Hotel Chocolat.

I have a cheap morphy richard milk heater/frother which we use for the hotel chocolate hot chocolate. It works ok

bambooplant · 13/11/2020 09:24

Similar to the comment above, you can buy a milk frother on amazon for £30 and it is essentially the same thing, if not better and more useful than the velvetiser. Then again if you want one go for it Grin and treat yourself

Someonesayroadtrip · 13/11/2020 09:30

Yes, it doesn't use powder it uses pure chocolate. Tastes great and pretty easy to clean (does it itself).

I would avoid the high % chocolate ones, unless you seriously love super dark chocolate, I personally love dark chocolate, usually have 70-75% but I can't handle it.

sueelleker · 13/11/2020 09:52

I was pleasantly surprised by the 85%; it wasn't as bitter as I'd expected.

TownHallDesigner · 13/11/2020 09:54

I love my Velvetizer. Use it more than I thought I would.

Sorry to jump on your thread OP - Do people just buy chocolate bars and grate them themselves? I was tempted by this but put off by £13 for 10 for hot chocs with the Hotel Chocolat ones

PrayingandHoping · 13/11/2020 10:06

@YellowEllis by the pots of it not the sachets. You don't need to use as much as they put in the sachet and u can control the quantity by using a pot.

Geepee71 · 13/11/2020 10:13

@YellowEllis we have been known to use a couple of very crushed flakes in the velvetiser, they have also got a range of latte's, again £ but they do have offers online occasionally.

Ooh this is a brilliant idea. I buy hot chocolate flakes (M&S have some salted caramel ones at the moment) rather than the official HC ones but I'm now tempted to see what else I could use.

I always add a pinch of salt too (unless it's salted caramel). So good.

So those of you just using a milk frother, can you talk me through the process please? Grin

PurBal · 13/11/2020 11:54

I love ours. Best Hot Chocolate.

I use a milk frothing jug that was cheap from Amazon. In the bottom is a little whisk that is magnetic.

Pour in 200ml of milk and whatever chocolate you're using (HC White Vanilla for me) and press the heat button. (mine also does cold milkshakes)
The whisk in the bottom will spin whilst its warming and after about 2 minutes its done. At this point I microwave my mug for ten seconds because none of these machines, velvetiser included, heat the chocolate to anything other than 'warm'.
Pull out the magnetic whisk and wash, rinse the jug. Done.
And for a lot less than the velevetiser price tag 😉

Personally I'd rather spend £25 on a cheap jug that does the same job and use the money Ive saved on rather nice chocolate.
