No, maybe ghost written by a highly skilled writer; but otherwise, self-written, no 😂

It takes a high level of skill to write well and entertainingly.

Few have it.

QuestionableMouse · 12/11/2020 22:30

Everyone can tell stories. Not everyone should write a book.

And I say that as a published author.

happinessischocolate · 12/11/2020 22:30

Nope, I've been told I should write a book because of some stuff that's happened in my life, but I'd struggle to write a 100 word essay let alone a book 😁

Myunhappyfeet · 12/11/2020 22:34

I think everyone has a book in them, but not necessarily a good one! In that we all have stories to tell and that's an important part of being human, but that's very different from being able to write well or from your book being interesting/relatable to a wide audience.

SauvignonGrower · 12/11/2020 22:36

Writing a book is painful, even if it is rewarding. Given it costs nothing to self-publish nowadays, I'd say write a book if you want to write a book. The vast majority won't get to publication stage because there are more fun things to do in the world for them.

ShirleyPhallus · 12/11/2020 22:38

Absolutely not. The author of Eat, Pray, Love has demonstrated that

WarriorsComeOutToPlayay · 12/11/2020 22:38

No but most people think they do

onyourway · 12/11/2020 22:41

I don't

HollowTalk · 12/11/2020 22:44

I'm a published writer and can't count the number of people who tell me they're going to write a book. None of them have, though! It's always interesting when people who never read a novel say they're going to write one - I think you have to be absorbed in books for years and years before you can make a good go at writing one.

WinWinnieTheWay · 12/11/2020 22:47

No, many people lack the imagination and graft required.

I write novels. I think virtually everyone has a story that, if well-written, would make a good book, be it memoir, fiction etc, but few people have the commitment and skill to get it from an anecdote told over a bottle of wine, or something scribbled in a diary, to something gripping to strangers on a page.

That’s the other thing — you absolutely have to be a reader to know how to write, and a lot of people who say ‘Oh, I’ve always meant to write a book’ simply don’t read at all, which is like never having picked up a hammer but declaring you’re going to build yourself a house nevertheless.

There’s a surprising amount to be learned from studying even bad books.

Lardlizard · 12/11/2020 23:56

Shirley funniest comment I’ve seen in ages !!

DH was convinced he had not one, but two books in him. Neither found a publisher and he never let me read the second one because "I'm not sure it's as good as the last one", which was dreadful. He's given up now thank god.

AdoptedBumpkin · 13/11/2020 00:05

I'd like to think I do. Grin

bodgeitandscarper · 13/11/2020 00:17

I knew of someone who used to write for Mills and Boon, lots of books called something like "Dorothy went downstairs". Dreadful novels, but they must have sold! An aqcuaintance has self published a novel, it is incredibly bad, but she's proud as punch of it. 😁

Camomila · 13/11/2020 05:46

I wrote about 40,000 words of a fantasy novel when I was pg with DS1 (never finished as I couldn't think of a good ending)
I'm writing some novel length fan fiction atm (probably will finish as I have the whole story in my head)

I read a lot so I can tell they are a bit cringy/where the grammar is wonky and they are probably both just going to stay in my laptop...but as a hobby its fun and it keeps your brain going :)

Camomila · 13/11/2020 05:46

(not pg, on mat leave, he used to nap a lot!)
