If you earn 30k, what do you do?

I earn that (pro rata), and most people outside of London I know with ‘decent’ jobs earn around £30-40k. Nothing more really.

I’m intrigued to know what other people do for that amount. As I thought it was a decent salary. But it seems it really isn’t in some people’s opinions.

I’m a PA. I could earn about another 10-15k more in the City but I haven’t the time nor patience.

My dear pal is a superstar PA. she earns comfortably in excess of $150,000. She’s paid for her discretion and unbelievable organization skills. She has looked / dresses the part since she was a kid with no A Levels, she’s amazing.

Elsiebear90 · 12/11/2020 20:12

Newly qualified clinical scientist, £33k plus extra for on call.

uglyface · 12/11/2020 20:15

onIRNBRU · 12/11/2020 20:17

46k Marketing Manager but my first Marketing manager role 5 years ago was 26k! Crazy how it's increased by 20k by simply applying for a new role in a different company and I'm literally doing the same thing!

Bargebill19 · 12/11/2020 20:18

Area cleaner and Dh earn a lot more as hgv driver.

PeterPanNeverLands · 12/11/2020 20:23

I'm part time but my FTE is around that. I'm an office manager/PA in Scotland.

No formal qualifications but have worked up.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 12/11/2020 20:26

Boohooyouho · 12/11/2020 20:29

Part time tube driver (3 days/ 21.5 hours per week) I’m on around 34k.

MrsT1405 · 12/11/2020 20:30

I'm on a pension which totals 32k. Worked in the university system and retired at 54 through ill health.
Plenty for a nice life .

Stationfork · 12/11/2020 20:33

Jenasaurus · 12/11/2020 20:35

Band 5, earn just over 30k in the NHS in an admin role.

ThatDamnScientist · 12/11/2020 20:37

@Lurchermom

I'm so pleased to hear I don't have a 'decent' job. Cheers!
Glad it wasn't just me that picked up on that, it was bloody rude!
Strictlysilly · 12/11/2020 20:38

DelphineWalsh · 12/11/2020 21:05

Project coordinator 30k. No qualifications just worked up from admin roles over the past 5 years.

Dinosauraddict · 12/11/2020 21:07

@noseresearch sorry I've just seen your comment. Hope you were successful. When I started on £31k the official advertised starting salaries that year were £27k I seem to remember. It does depend what department and role you're placed in. Progression is good too. I went up to £39k after a year, £55k two years after that, and now I'm on over £65k.

Ellovera2 · 12/11/2020 21:38

Teacher. 8 years experience, subject lead of 3 subjects, mentor, local authority moderator. One of the best teachers at my school, but it's all they can afford.
Schools are skint. It's not straight up the pay ladder like everyone thinks.
My first 2 years teaching I worked in a pub all weekend to be able to pay my mortgage.
Thinking of retraining 🤔
