Offered a promotion at work - not sure whether to accept

I've been offered a new role at work. It's a slight step up and in a different location.
It's a great opportunity, it's a high profile position and lots of interesting projects. So what's the problem, right?
The reason I'm unsure is because I've only been in my current role for 8 months, I'm good at it, I enjoy it and I really love my team. They've been mucked around previously and not had a proper manager for years. I'd not expected to be offered another role so quickly and I feel terrible for leaving them when they thought they were finally going to have a proper, consistent manager. There is also a really complicated HR issue with one team member that I have really got stuck into and I'm worried if I move on, that my replacement won't handle it properly.
What should I do? I'm so torn!

Sounds like you really care for your team which is great to hear, but equally this opportunity sounds really positive for you and your career.

Your manager and hr should have the same concerns about your team- could you agree to interview your replacement and have a longer handover with the new manager

I really admire your thoughtfulness for your team, but sadly I think if this opportunity is a good one you would be foolish to not further your own career for the sake of colleagues.

What if the person with the HR issue leaves the day after you turn down the job?

I think the advice above about handover & interview is very sensible.

To be blunt they'll get over it. They might think of you in the months to come but not after a year or two so don't sacrifice a good career move for the team.

Good handover advice above.

Thanks. Good advice. And I hadn't thought about if the person with the HR issue left just after I'd turned down the job. I'd be furious! And disappointed. Which I suppose tells me that I definitely want to take it. Just wish I didn't have to leave them all behind!

Can you ask if you can keep line management for the tricky case until it's resolved?

HoundOfTheBasketballs · 12/11/2020 08:19

That's what my DP suggested last night @midgebabe I'm going to ask my manager. It would be highly unusual but not necessarily impossible.
