I have a hospital appointment next week and have to provide a copy of the appointment letter to work in order to have the time off.

I don't really want them to know what the appointment is for so do you think it would it be acceptable to blank out the department on the copy of the letter I give them? So it just shows the date and time?

I don’t see why not. I would do it digitally or on a photocopy so you still have the original though!

I am not HR but I have been a senior manager and that sounds fucking ludicrous as a requirement. I'd never have asked my staff for anything like that - self-cert like an illness.

To be fair, I don't have any employee handbooks to hand so may be managing wrong :D But also right.

That's a standard request where I work but I would have no issue with you blanking out the dept. Hope you are ok

I’m a Head of HR. I’m sure if you just blank out the details and explain why you’ve done it that should be fine.
It’s a shame that you don’t feel you can trust your HR team to deal with the information without having to blank out the details.

I do work in a school @GreyWall

Sadly, there is no confidentiality around personal issues. The appointment isn't an embarrassing one but I really don't want everyone knowing my business.

Thank you everyone; I'm going to blank it out and see what happens.
