Please explain to me why my brilliant idea wouldn’t work/doesn’t exist yet

DH and I do do a ‘big shop’ either online or in the big supermarket, once every 10-14 days or so. Though obviously we need to supplement that with top ups of the basics - bread/milk/eggs/salad bits.

I’ve recently had DD (12 weeks old) and suddenly I’ve realised just how hard it is to ‘pop’ into the shops when we’re driving back from somewhere. It’s one thing when we have a quiet day and I can make ‘going to the Co-Op’ the focus with a walk etc but if I’m on the way back from somewhere the idea of parking up, going to the boot, getting out the pram, assembling it, getting DD out of the car seat, going into the shop, getting what we need, then the whole thing in reverse is just exhausting! Also often DD is asleep in the car and I know the whole process will wake her up whereas sometimes I can sneak her into the house without waking (sometimes!)

So here’s my idea: a drive through, but for basic groceries. Obviously I wouldn’t expect to be able to get complex or fancy stuff but you know when you stop at a petrol station after hours and they serve you from the Perspex window and the shop assistant grabs the basics you need? Like that, but a basic shop with multiple windows like the drive through at McDonald’s etc.

There must be a reason why this doesn’t exist yet. Is it that for most people, parking up and getting out of the car isn’t too tricky? But that’s true of McDonalds drive through and they still exist. I’m sure if there was a market for it it would exist... so MN, tell me, why doesn’t it? Grin

"There are so many demographic groups that would benefit from more things being drive through.

In the States that also have drive through banks. Envious of that too."

We shouldn't be envious of a country that promotes the car so much. One of the reasons for their terrible obesity rates. We shouldn't go down that route.

MyGazeboisLeaking · 11/11/2020 18:59

It would be a great idea for a teenager on a bike in a small area, OP.

Dial-a-delivery type thing - message the teenager, 4 or 5 items, £4 delivery, there you go.

I'd pay for it on occasion.

Nsky · 11/11/2020 19:00

Get a delivery pass, then you can hsve little shops at no extra, seems the best option

Funnily enough, op, I had exactly the same idea with my first baby. But then he grew up a bit and shopping was no longer such a hassle, and I forgot all about the idea.

I expect that might be the reason - the baby stage doesn't last that long in the scheme of things Wink

islockdownoveryet · 11/11/2020 19:06

Op I've had the same idea because my argument is parking and obviously during these times when you have kids and they don't wear mask etc .
I've said often to my dh and others why is there no drive through banks / chemists/ post offices ?
I mean why I don't get why we have drive through food places even drive through costa coffee but not a drive through post office or corner shop as near me no parking hardly near these shops .
My dh said well so many places do click and collect and delivery even local shops can order trough deliveroo / Uber eats .
But I agree more drive through places please .

Lweji · 11/11/2020 19:09

Surely it's the type of thing one of the parents does while the other has the child.
Or the parent just carries the child without the pram to get a bottle of milk from the shop.

MrsMiaWallis · 11/11/2020 19:11

Stick the baby in a sling and go to the shop!

MazyT1978 · 11/11/2020 19:13

I think it's a really good idea,
The next town along from me has a drive through boots pharmacy which is very popular 🙂

FlyNow · 11/11/2020 19:19

I used to work for McDonald's and they considered doing a trial of this - having milk and bread available to buy at the counter and through drive thru. They didn't go ahead with it in the end because the store isn't really designed for it, no where to store the stuff at the front so you'd be running to to back to get it slowing service down, and in most stores space is so tight there is no where to store it at the back either.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/11/2020 19:31

@MouseholeCat

A drive in Liquor Store - fantastic so one doesn't have to even bother getting out of your car to get some more alcohol (but not milk!)

Fine, I don't think I can see any issues there. Hmm

VivaMiltonKeynes · 11/11/2020 19:44

Get your DH to do it on the way home from work !

OhGingleBells · 11/11/2020 19:45

Would be good for dog owners too! No worrying about leaving the window cracked or the car heating up! Better for the dogs that spend the whole time the owner is in the shop barking...(my dog Sad )

laudemio · 11/11/2020 19:45

Put the baby in a sling much easier than faffing with a pram
Get online deliveries.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 11/11/2020 19:46

I sort of have this, in a way.

Our local teeny village shop sees me park outside and puts my order in the boot. I run in and swipe my card on the machine near the door, jump back in car and go.

laudemio · 11/11/2020 19:47

Also milk and more

HaggieMaggie · 11/11/2020 19:49

@MrsMiaWallis

Do you mean click and collect...

Vthirtyone · 11/11/2020 19:58

My friend lives in the States and at her daughter's school they have a drive through drop off/pick up! Absolute genius and would save on the awks playground politics

RoseHarper · 11/11/2020 20:05

It's a good idea - similarly I've always wondered why there isn't somewhere in an airport which sells bread/milk etc...when you arrive home after a flight? Could be small...like an ice-cream van size for eg Supermarkets could have drive through kiosks in the car parks - easy to stock from the main store each day but no need to get out of the car for speed/with baby/disability etc? Could stock basics within easy reach of person serving and with chip and pin easy payments.

CandyLeBonBon · 11/11/2020 20:05

@laudemio

Also milk and more
Bloody Milk and More STILL won't do my location. So annoying!
JovialNickname · 11/11/2020 20:13

I thought the same about my umbrella hat

LizaE · 11/11/2020 20:18

@Love51 When I had babies I invented the idea if a drive thru pharmacy so you can leave the child in their car seat. Would be great about now.

There's a Boots in Enfield that has this.

Clevs · 11/11/2020 20:44

When I've been through McDonalds Drive Thru with my sleeping baby (now toddler) the bellowing voice out of the speaker asking for my order is enough to wake him up.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 11/11/2020 20:49

We have milk petrol stations here. Vending machines. They're in the farmyards of dairy farms and usually also sell eggs

kieninghof.de/ Farm fresh milk vending machine - bring your own bottle. Eggs and cheese in the fridge - honesty box.

There are no shops open on Sunday, or bank holiday, or after 8pm on any day though, and no online grocery shopping...

You could definitely leave your baby in the car like paying at the pump for petrol.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 11/11/2020 20:55

Egg and home made egg pasta vending machine

Please explain to me why my brilliant idea wouldn’t work/doesn’t exist yet

I think you'll find the Country Lines people have this model already up and running.
