When I was 11 I was very shy and wouldn’t say boo to a ghost. One day I got on the school bus, went to put my bag under the seat and realised I’d left it at the bus stop. I ran down the stairs in a panic and said it the driver in a terrified voice ‘I’ve left my bag at the bus stop’. He stopped the bus looked at me kindly, smiled and said ‘I hope you can run fast’. And he let me run back and get it. I’ve never forgotten how kind he was to a scared 11 year old.

When I was 11 and due to take the 11plus I was really frightened. My sister was the clever one and already at the best girl's grammar in the city and I knew I wouldn't get there. My granddad had a friend, he was an old guy and always seemed a bit odd and he drank alot but the week before the exam he got a pencil out of his pocket and gave it to me and said it was a lucky pencil and if I used it in the exam I'd pass. I used it and I passed, the old man and the lucky pencil helped me.

My Mum wasn't particularly nice to me in my mid-late teens.

My best friend's Mum took me under her wing and I felt very welcome at their house. .My other friend's Dad drove me home from choir at 9pm at night instead of me walking 20-30mins home in the dark. My Mum lived a 5 minute drive away but couldn't be arsed to come and get me. She never worked and had hours of free time when we were at school. I work 20-25 hours a week and am a carer to both of my kids and I still take them to clubs 3-4 times a week without thinking about it.
