How do I fund home improvements?

Our very old boiler and windows are now almost defunct. We also have a few other house repairs needed. But we have no money to fund it. We already have a loan to pay off our car and have only just managed to pay off our credit card debt and I really don't want to take out any more. Ideally we would add it the mortgage but we are only 1 year in to a new 5 year fixed rate mortgage and I think if we wanted to change that we would have to pay a new arraignment fee of at least £1k. Does anyone have any advice on what we should do to fund these repairs? I reckon we will need about £8-£10k in total.

Look at the current government grants that go on till March 2021.

Off the top of my head they cover windows and insulation. May even do boilers.

I think you might be able to get a grant for the boiler. Search the gov website perhaps.
I would think windows companies will do payment plans, but compare the interest rates with getting a generic loan from the bank

When we bought our house there was no central heating and we needed a new boiler and windows also. We took out a bank loan.

Google housing and energy saving grants/money saving expert and latest info is there.

We had a fixed rate plus variable rate mortgage on our property when we bought it. Ported in the existing fixed rate and added a variable one. It needs to be with the same lender but your mortgage provider may do this?

We borrowed off our 1 year old mortgage and it was fine. They saw it as an investment as we were making improvements (new windows, adding in central heating etc) which would eventually increase the value of the house - which it did. So maybe worth a hypothetical conversation with your mortgage company.

Thanks everyone. I looked into the govt funding/loan scheme today but unfortunately we don't qualify for anything. I also spoke to our mortgage provider and that sounds promising. We can get a £15k home improvement mortgage add on for about £70 a month which is manageable.
