Can anyone help me identify this statue?

When I was a kid, we used to go to a park where there was a statue of a little girl crying (I think on a bench?).

Caitlin Moran's amazing Twitter thread of female statues (here, if you're interested: mobile.twitter.com/caitlinmoran ) has made me think of her again, but I've googled and can't find her for the life of me!

I thought she was in Clumber Park, but could have been somewhere else around Nottingham - any ideas?

I'm very local to Clumber Park and go regularly and it doesn't ring any bells!

BessSedgwick · 11/11/2020 06:37

Found a picture of her! Does anyone recognise her?

Sadly, kat, I think you're right; it's not Clumber Park. This is going to annoy me all day!

Can anyone help me identify this statue?

I did s Google image search but nothing came up! Maybe it's not there any more?

What does it say on the stone beside it? Might that help?

HPLikecraft · 11/11/2020 07:21

Ah, it says "monument"

BessSedgwick · 11/11/2020 11:46

Yes, and I googled with 'monument'added, but still no joy. I think you must be right that she isn't there any more; my only hope is that someone will see this and remember her!

If it's near where you lived, could you ask at a local school? (Assuming you don't still know people you went to school with). Or on a local Facebook group.

Mrsbclinton · 11/11/2020 12:11

Thats one scary statue😂

steppemum · 11/11/2020 12:11

that's a really sad statue Sad

Pyewhacket · 11/11/2020 12:12

I would have thrown that into the River and kept Colston.

BessSedgwick · 11/11/2020 12:14

Nooooo, she's lovely! I loved her so much when I was a kid (possibly because we had the same shoes ...?!)

Fog, thank you - such a great idea, but because we went with my grandparents, I can't remember where it would have been. Somewhere around Nottinghamshire... unless we saw her when we went on holiday?! I am the worst detective in the world 🤦‍♀️

I treid to do a reverse image search, but you need just the girl really

steppemum · 11/11/2020 12:53

It looks like it is in a cemetary

I cropped the image and it still didn't find it!

frogsareflyinginfromthewest · 11/11/2020 13:06

could it be at Newstead Abbey? That arch in the background looks familiar....

PuppyMonkey · 11/11/2020 13:11

It doesn’t look familiar to me and I’m local to you. You should post that pic on the Nottingham Bygones and History page on FB - someone’s bound to know it.

picklemewalnuts · 11/11/2020 13:30

I'm nottingham. I'll post and see if anyone recognises her.

picklemewalnuts · 11/11/2020 13:38

Ha! No I won't! It won't let me save your photo. I would have cropped/obscured the real child, though!

BessSedgwick · 11/11/2020 14:05

Ha! Thanks for trying, though- and to those who have been searching! Can't believe she is unfindable - were it not for the photo, I'd think I'd imagined her!

(There's a novel in this story, somewhere ...)

Just a suggestion but wondering if it was taken at one of the garden festivals which is why you can't find it now as it was temporary. The was one in Liverpool 84 and Stoke on Trent in 86

Pavlova31 · 11/11/2020 14:14

What a sad looking statue Sad

OhMsBeliever · 11/11/2020 17:25

Where did you go on holiday? That may help with the search.

BessSedgwick · 11/11/2020 20:16

We would probably have been somewhere around Nottinghamshire or Yorkshire, or somewhere in between. I realise that doesn't narrow it down a lot ...!

I think Zapp may have it - it would explain why no one remembers her or why she's not coming up on google. (Though given people's reaction to her on this thread, perhaps she was taken down because no one liked her!!)

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 11/11/2020 22:07

İt reminds me of a garden festival too

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 11/11/2020 22:13

That statue is terrifying. Like Dr Who level of terrifying...

GaryTheDemon · 11/11/2020 22:16

Dear gods, how am I meant to sleep after seeing that?

ZappBrannigan · 12/11/2020 17:57

It could be worth popping it up on facebook maybe seeing if anyone in Stoke or Liverpool remember. My money out of those two would be more on Stoke because they used the area around Etruria Hall for the historic gardens section www.thepotteries.org/where/025.htm

But I guess equally it could be a stately home garden and a temp exhibition? Sorry I know that's not much help! I've scratched my head for all the places I know in my area that have red brick in their gardens and I just can't seem to find something that matches

I did go to the Gateshead one in 90 but it doesn't ring a bell, though I doubt I saw everything as it was a group trip with the Guides and only for a few hours.
