Would anyone employ a declutterer?

Whenever I read a thread on here about someone drowning in clutter and desperately trying to sort it out I'm almost foaming at the mouth wishing I could go to their house and help.
I absolutely love sorting, organising and streamlining. I seem to be good at it as well.
I'm wondering if I've missed my niche, could I set up a sideline doing this for people? I'd probably do it for free to be honest Grin but is there a business opportunity here?

I would employ you..

joystir59 · 10/11/2020 20:16

My friend is a professional declutterer www.instagram.com/clutteredtocleared/

Cheesypea · 10/11/2020 20:20

It sounds great op. But yes you would need to pay for disposal of items that cant be recycled as it's a business.

MsAwesomeDragon · 10/11/2020 20:22

I'd like someone to just come in and do it for me. I don't want someone to help me declutter, I want someone to declutter for me. I have the skills, and I don't have emotional attachments to my clutter, BUT I don't have the time to do it properly. There's too much stuff to sort into "give away", "recycle", bin, sell, etc piles. I want to just say "get rid of all this stuff" and then it'll just go. I'll happily do the sorting into keep and go piles, but then I want someone else to have the decisions about what to do with everything that needs to go!!

floofycroissant · 10/11/2020 20:23

No I love chucking stuff away.

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/11/2020 20:23

I'd totally hire someone

ThirteenOClock · 10/11/2020 20:29

I think it’s a great idea OP - you could be the next Kondo!

Souperspooker · 10/11/2020 20:32

Yes and I have done. She's fab and worth every penny. I get ten times more cleared with her than I would without. So v v time efficient- in midst of much falling apart house renovations, toddler taming, caring for elderly relly , plus school run etc time is in short supply but mess is not.
I'm so glad of having my hand held while sending on their way all the 'precious' things my mother has passed on to me that she didn't know what to do with!
I'm finally finding the house I've been after all these years -mainly due to her assistance. My understair cupboard looks like a laundry room now with labels nice boxes etc, it's a triumph!

She also does PA type work although I haven't used this, recommends trades, can coordinate home renovations. Also assists with house moves of all scales, very grand eg putting flowers ready in every room , through to moving into care homes - sounds like a fascinating job.

There is definitely a market for ADHD/poor executive function clients who find it almost physically painful to get motivation/planning & sequencing to coincide reliably!

SquirrelFan · 10/11/2020 20:47

@Souperspooker is she in London?

saraclara · 10/11/2020 20:49

At £20 an hour I'd definitely book you, OP. You're exactly what I need.

This house had for people's stuff in it, yet I live alone. My adult daughters have tiny homes, so have been unable to take everything they owned, and I still have a lot of my late husband's thing. I buy new clothes but don't get rid of the old ones, and have a lift and a garage full of random stuff.

I basically just need someone to keep me focused, be gently bossy with me, and just encourage and organise me.

It would be fantastic if they brought a load of boxes/bags and an organising system with them, to be returned at a later date.

saraclara · 10/11/2020 20:51

Ugh typos. Loft obv. Hopefully the others are clearer.

Heyahun · 10/11/2020 20:53

Omg me too I would love to get into so many peoples houses and declutter and organise for them

I bloody love it 😍

fallfallfall · 10/11/2020 20:57

Not sure it’s been mentioned/suggested, but pantries! Yup specialize in sorting pantries. Make closets look photo worthy.

Joditaylorfan · 11/11/2020 09:27

Yes just personality clash I think. It felt intrusive, whereas if we had got on well, as if friends, it could have felt quite different.

Souperspooker · 11/11/2020 10:53

Squirrelfan - no sorry

notafanoftheman · 11/11/2020 12:11

I would absolutely pay someone to spend a day putting the various bits of jigsaws etc back together and setting up a proper system.

Ginkypig · 11/11/2020 13:01

I’ve been doing the de cluttering and been getting on quite well but being a non driver and disabled means I can’t get to tip/charity shop so I currently have mountains of bags in my hall and cupboard that need thrown away or donated with just a single small wheelie bin that if there is room (after my normal household waste) I can fit one bag a fortnight in Sad it’s going to take months!

the bit I need help with is

Removal of the stuff that needs to go.

Sourcing suitable (not expensive) storage then someone Sorting the things I’m keeping into usable storage, so things on shelves in my cupboard that hold everything that mean I could just go in open something and get the package tape or stapler or whatever I need at the time.

So someone getting the storage putting it in place then for example collecting together everything from one “category” like crafts or gift bag/tags/cards or stuff to post a letter or package or shoes or gardening stuff etc and putting it in the storage so that from then on that’s where it lives.

yellowbeaker · 11/11/2020 14:30

@Darkestseasonofall I'd be really interested in using you. I live in the south west and could really use some help.
I feel very overwhelmed by life at the mo (my Dr thinks I might have ADHD which i've read into and lots of people with it struggle with organisation and clutter.) I am really embarrassed by the mess my house has gotten into. I started decluttering but don't seem to be able to get the stuff out of the house and my family look at me as if I am mad! If one of them took it away for me I would be find, but I have a mental block for allowing myself to get rid of

ShagMeRiggins · 11/11/2020 14:34

@ladybee28

Check out www.apdo.co.uk/ - they'll be able to give you lots of support and info.
Yep, came on to mention this group. I’ve employed a declitter, twice, she was amazing and kind and nonjudgmental.

I’m thinking or having her back because she’s also expert in organising, which is what the office needs, and is different from decluttering.

Also, £20p/h is not enough.

ShagMeRiggins · 11/11/2020 14:39

@OwlOne

Two women who live near me set themselves up in this business. I dont know how you can trust strangers to know what is clutter and what you cant bear to lose.
Mine asked. Very matter-of-factly, never challenged a decision. Three boxes (Chuck, donate, store), everything labelled, everything ended up with a home, even if temporary.

Wonderfully liberating service.

CovidTrialGuineaPig · 11/11/2020 16:41

These women: www.style-sisters.com/interior-styling

Appreciate your idea is a little different but they appear to charge a day rate. That might work better or you could do both.

notafanoftheman · 11/11/2020 17:06

shagmeriggins I would categorically NOT use a declitter. I’m rather fond of mine Wink

Redhound · 11/11/2020 17:14

I did this for a while when between jobs, once a week for a friend of a friend who just needed a hand-hold going through paperwork which was emotionally draining for her plus some very cluttered rooms. I also helped with her gardening, dog walking and cleaning. Quite enjoyed it as we chatted as we went along.

GroundAlmonds · 11/11/2020 17:39

I would. Actually I might Blush
