Neighbour stole cat :(

Fressia123 · 10/11/2020 11:27

Our neighbour has been feeding the cat even though we've told him repeatedly we didn't want him to. Now our cat will come and say hello but she won't stay (nor come inside). Is there anything we can do??

Who wants to bet that the neighbour will be knocking on OP's door soon to say the cat has gone missing.

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/11/2020 18:18

www.petforums.co.uk/threads/cheap-diy-ways-to-cat-proof-garden.502581/ you can diy it. Just spray all the metal with satin black paint so it matches.

Fressia123 · 11/11/2020 07:35

Cat is still here this morning. Has used her litter box and doesn't seem too demanding to go out. We really missed her!

One of our neighbours did this with our cat. They were slightly further away and at first, I couldn’t work out where she was. Then I saw her in the street and picked her up and took her home. She struggled and soon disappeared again.

I gave up then because she obviously didn’t want to stay with us and said that to the woman who took her. Soon afterwards the woman came round to say that the cat needed expensive treatment at the vet and wanted me to pay. The answer was in the negative.

God the utter nerve of some people.

Bet it felt good to tell her to get lost though. Cheeky bugger.

I had this problem with one of my neighbours who lived a few streets away who let my boy in despite saying no feeding , don't let him in ,just admire from afar. She kept doing it too and it didn't matter how many times nicely of course stop doing it. She even let him stay over night etc. Eventually after being nice for ages and talking face to face none of which worked, I sent a cheeky text which ended up her blocking me. Absolute headcase of a woman. I said to her you wouldn't let someone's child or dog into the house without permission so a cat is no different. I think the penny dropped but not before blocking me!

Anyway, I got my boy a tracker and this one you can beep the collar(weenect2) It's worked for us as anytime he's near the offending house , I get an alert on my phone and tracker gets beeped and my boy has learned to come back. My husband thinks I'm crazy of course but it's worked. If she lets him in its for a very short time and I'll just beep it until he's back. It will only work of course if they will wear a collar as the tracker fits on it. My boy will wear it no bother though but it's quite bulky. You can get less fancy ones too but maybe a tracker will give you at least peace of mind to see where they are going?

I’m just here to ask for more dog pictures! What sort of dog have you got?

Glad cat is still there.

Fressia123 · 11/11/2020 13:20

She's an Airedale terrier :)

I had two cats run over and killed when some idiot kept feeding them so they kept crossing a busy road to get there. This was despite repeatedly telling them not to and why!

I also had another cat kept visiting a neighbour because they were feeding him. He became absolutely massive! We kept him in for a while, gave him chicken breast and loads of attention and love and he never did it again.

One thing someone once said to me was that someone reported to the Police that their cat microchip had been stolen obviously along with the cat. This actually got a response apparently...

Devlesko · 11/11/2020 14:21

There's a woman near us who pays expensive vets fees and the cat has 3 houses where it eats and is cared for.
You can't own a cat, they are free roamers and hunters.
People will insist on wanting to own them.
If this neighbour stops, are you going to tell the whole street and the street after that not to feed the cat.

Paranoidmarvin · 11/11/2020 14:52

This is how I ended up with mine. A lady down the road had her cat taken by another neighbour. They then stopped feeding it. It wouldn’t go back to the original owner but instead came to me. Been without food for days as they had decided they don’t want it anymore after cat napping it.

People have tried to take him again. I just saying on the village Facebook that she is on expensive medication. And suddenly they stop.

I love my cat. But I wouldn’t choose to have one. But as they stopped feeding it. And it had nowhere else to go I started to feed it. ( with the original owners permission ).

Pollynextdoor · 11/11/2020 14:58

We had this and had to keep our cat on for a few weeks to change his habits.

I also used to go knocking on my neighbours door demanding my cat back. He is on daily medication which he really needs.

seizethecuttlefish · 11/11/2020 16:27

My old neighbour stole my cat. She hadn't been home in a few days so I put fliers through the doors. She actually took here collar off and put a new one on with her details. I called her and explained it was my cat, she'd removed the collar but the microchip details were mine. My cat was very distinctive. She was a complete cow! Told me the cat preferred her and that it'd be easier if I just gave her my vets details, to save any trouble. Police told me that there are no laws governing cats and even though I had everything saying I owned her (even adoption papers) I was stuck. She called my vet who read her the riot act but I never got my cat back. She even called to ask for the vaccination certificates so she could put her in a battery while she was on holiday.
I would try and appeal to her better nature. Don't f your cat comes back. Lock her in and spoil her for a few days. Cats are fickle.

Fressia123 · 11/11/2020 16:38

It's horrible out there and I think that helps! To be fair she hasn't been as demanding as I thought she'd be

This happened to me as a kid. A lady a few doors down started feeding one of our cats... he was happy at home but slowly moved out. He came back for a few days at a time over the next few months, but gradually just seemed to move in completely with the neighbour. The police wouldn't get involved, the neighbour said they would provide food and the cat would choose where it wanted to be. I was gutted, but she wouldn't listen.

To be fair, he seemed to have a long and happy life with her and sometimes came to say hi and get some fuss when were in the street, or into the house, but it was clear he lived there now. He was really unhappy being kept inside, so there wasn't much we could do about it.

The RSPCA and our vets said that it may have been my little sister becoming a toddler that put him off, or just that he preferred the other house... nothing useful, though.

I hope your cat stays, but I suspect you'll need to limit outside time considerably if she seems to prefer the other house, or she'll slowly move there.

BlueJag · 11/11/2020 16:48

I think life at yours has become too much for the cat. Cats don't fully belong to us. If she wants to stay with the neighbour all you can do is let her.
I'm sure it's sad for you but I'm sure you want the best for her.
We adopted the cat from our neighbours. They adopted 2 dogs and the cat decided to move on to ours. They are nervous animals.

Fressia123 · 11/11/2020 16:51

She's been with the dog for almost two years now. I really think the culprit is the 12mo tbh

I had this with one of my cats, my crazy neighbour insisted on feeding our very well-fed cat, even when we told her he was vomitting every day from whatever she was giving him. He had numerous trips to the vets over it. I found it very upsetting as she clearly didn't care about the cat that much! You couldn't reason with her. My cat once got stuck up a tree in the garden, I was encouraging him to come down, and my neighbour was on the other side of the fence doing the same!

Fressia123 · 12/11/2020 20:04

The neighbour has messaged to ask about the whereabouts of the cat....

Cheeky fucker. I'd ignore, not their cat, non of their business.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/11/2020 20:41

Oh my lord what a cheek, what did you say?.

bentneckwine1 · 12/11/2020 20:45

I recently moved house and one of my old neighbours keeps feeding my cat - she has a bed, dishes etc and I have lost count of the number of times I have collected my cat from her house.

The neighbour has dementia and is adamant she is not letting him in or feeding him but she is. The poor cat does not know if he is coming or going

MrsTwitcher · 12/11/2020 20:48

Did you reply with a pic of cat in own home all snuggling up.
