Thinking of getting 11 year old DD one, are they worth it

At 11 they can have a current account with debit card

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 09/11/2020 20:39

I had one as a "free" trial. Its damn near impossible to cancel so I'm now being charged for it. Personally I think a bank account with debit card is just as good.

TwylaSands · 09/11/2020 20:39

My dc, 8 and 10, have them. They love spending and watching the money grow. I like having total control. Their grandad has been shielding since march, struggling to spend his pension Grin, and so gives them spending money every week on it.

I have a saving account for her and asked today about a debit card and they said not until she is 14

DD loves the idea of it Smile

Both mine got current accounts at age 11 with debit card. Where did you ask?

dementedpixie · 09/11/2020 20:46

I wouldn't be paying £2.99 a month for something you can get for nothing

DominaShantotto · 09/11/2020 20:46

Mine do - I don't like the charge level but it's about the only solution I've found until they're a bit older (especially since all the ruddy banks around here have closed).

dementedpixie · 09/11/2020 20:47

You dont get debit cards for a savings account. They would need a current account

It was TSB. I was in beach today and asked but I might have a look on line and try and find out

My son had one. The app is really good buy the lockdown came and there was no point paying the fee,

BiBabbles · 09/11/2020 20:48

It varies from bank to bank. Earlier this year I was able to get my 13 year old a current account with a debit card & phone app, but everywhere local to me wasn't opening accounts for 11 year olds (with some saying it was being postponed due to lockdown, but would reopen later).

I'd look around for a bank rather than something that charges, but I do like that my older kids have their own cards that I can send money to.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 09/11/2020 20:48

Mine had a Barclays account at 11 with a debit card and that was a few years ago so imagine lots of banks do it now.

Ahh this was a savings account, so i would be able to open a separate current account Thanks I'll have a look on line

I wouldn’t get one because the name irritates me.

Why is it called Go Henry? What does that say to girls about who’s in charge of money?

Savoretti · 09/11/2020 20:51

Metro Bank are open through lockdown and you can open an account there and then. Need passport (or ID) for you and child. They even print the card there and then. Both DS and I have the app so I can keep an eye too...

www.tsb.co.uk/current-accounts/under-19s-bank-accounts/

Looks like it would need opening in branch. Some other banks will open them online

PiccalilliChilli · 09/11/2020 21:01

My teenager has an account with debit card at Santander. When she turns 18 they turn it into a proper current account.

We looked at getting Go Henry or similar but it's cheaper to run a debit card account.

Nutrigrainygoodness · 09/11/2020 21:10

Dd (11) has had one for about 2 years. I stick her pocket money on it every month and she uses it all the time.

You can turn off the function to shop online or the ability to draw cash out.

I'm with a building society perks of living in the middle of nowhere so dd probably can't get an actual current account with a card until she's 72. 😂

dementedpixie · 09/11/2020 21:11

She doesn't need to bank at the same place as you. Some banks let you open the child current account online. Your current place may also offer a child account with card

I cancelled mine by emailing. This was before lockdown though.
TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 09/11/2020 21:15

Thanks @mogloveseggs their website said I have to call but never seem to get through on the phone. I'll try an email!

Avebury · 09/11/2020 21:15

I have Go Henry for DS8 but DS11 has just opened a Nationwide current account with debit card. They weren't doing it in branch but over the phone and I had to take his ID in to be verified before the appointment

nameychange · 09/11/2020 21:16

Mine have had nationwide accounts since baby’s then we got them the flex one once the were 11. Free and has online banking. They also then got the saving account link to it which meant they could save and spend.
