Midday supervisor job- are they always like this?

Hi all

I’ve recently started the above job. We are required to put out and put away 27 heavy tables and the same amount of heavy benches every day. There are two of us doing this but it’s very hard work and apparently a lot of people have quit over it.

Also at times they expect only one of us to be in the hall dealing with 50 odd kids per sitting, including all the clearing away, assisting and helping the little kids cut up their food. We have said that it’s too much and you end up running around like a mad person but nobody seems to listen or understand.

We also regularly run over our supposed end time because everything takes too long to clear up.

This is the problem with these kinds of jobs OP ..they are so undervalued and they shouldnt be.It is a key role and much needed and its hard to do when you are so unsupported and undervalued. You dont even earn a wage really...I get the appeal of these jobs when trying to fit in with a family but for all the hassle I question if they are really worth it...It sounds like it isnt the job for you I would just try and get another job then leave.

It is not worth damaging your back for OP. It is a shame that jobs like this as the above poster says are not really valued that much. These are people's children that are being looked after when you think about it. The stress of looking out for so many children never changed for me on the playground, because there was never enough lunchtime assistants.

I did the job 10 years ago and we definitely had more staff back then. You would only end up with one in the hall and the rest of the staff in the playground when you were down to below 10 kids still eating.

School have had to cut back massively and I guess this is what it looks like for mms staff. My last school work was as a hlta , and when I came back from maternity leave 6 TAs had left and not been replaced , it had changed from a good place to work to a bit of a mess.

I'm sorry you're new job is disappointing op , I wouldn't blame you if you left.

No job is worth that. There seems to be a lack of respect for the job you do which is clear from how your concerns are dismissed. I would be bothered by the fact you are lifting heavy furniture yet have not had manual handling training. Is that not illegal?

I know this thread is from a while ago it's just something I'm thinking of doing so have been searching.
Do you still work there now?

Viviennemary · 05/12/2020 22:09

This is an unreasonable amount of heavy work required to be done at speed. Ask the person in charge to do a risk assessment. Its total exploitation IMHO.
