well, CHEESE. Like cheddar or similar?
I have recently returned to vegetarianism after many years (was a veggie til I had kids) and would really like to move to a more vegan diet ..but I love cheese! I've tried a few and they were sadly disappointing but that was a while ago.. is there anything nice (for sandwhiches, on toast, melted on jacket spuds) that would do?

Violife is the nicest I've tried and I think I must have tried almost all of them lol. It's good for melting and has a cheese taste but sadly i've just never found any of them as nice as real cheese!

Newkitty · 08/11/2020 22:04

I’ve recently discovered violife slices, which are much better than any vegan cheese I’ve had in the past. Nice in a sandwich

NameChange30 · 08/11/2020 22:04

Nope. Violife is vile. Sorry.

Applewood!!!

Violate cheese slices are the only ones I can stand, even their other types of cheese are pretty rank in my opinion.

Shop bought vegan cheese all have this sickly taste to them.

I have used yeast flakes and cashews to make creamy cheesy sauces though and that’s been lovely.

helloxhristmas · 08/11/2020 22:11

Nope. They're all vile.

CommunistLegoBloc · 08/11/2020 22:13

They're all grim. I tend to find the 'natural' alternatives better than the processed stuff, but it's not the same. Cashews and yeast flakes (these are good in a risotto especially) but there's no replacement for good pizza cheese or in a sandwich etc

Applewood smoked is ok but really the nicest ones are the more artisan brands which are unfortunately quite pricey. Look at Mouse's Favourite, Tyne Cheese, Kinda Co. But I think really, it's best to leave cheese for a while when you become vegan then try it after a few months when you won't notice that they don't quite taste like cheese! Follow your Heart gouda style cheese is sold in Tesco and that's quite nice too.

NameChange30 · 08/11/2020 22:26

Follow Your Heart parmesan is ok on pasta.
Mozzarisella is ok ish on pizza but not a patch on the real thing.
I prefer avocado / guacamole to fake cheese as an extra in burgers and burritos.
There's no point trying to replicate a cheese sandwich.

PurpleDaisies · 08/11/2020 22:31

Violife is horrible.

Asda free from mature cheddar is ok. Sainsbury’s fake feta and cheddar are quite nice. I don’t mind applewood.

If you’re after a cheese spread, Nush with chives is lovely. Similar to Boursin but quite pricey.

Vegan cheeses are quite personal taste. I think you’ve got to try a few and see. If you love cheese, you might be better just giving up.

As veganism is a lifestyle choice (i.e not health related), the choice then is either do without or buy proper cheese. My sister is vegan and does without as they're all unappetising.

Arla tastes like proper mature cheddar and is lovely.

I kind of do without, Applewood occasionally but most are grim. Try giving up cheese for 6 months before you try a vegan one.

MrsAvocet · 08/11/2020 23:05

I've been looking for a decent cheese alternative for over 15 years for my dairy allergic family members but with no real success. I'm told that the best ones are made from cashew nuts and I know someone who makes her own cashew "cheese" which at least looks quite like dairy cheese. Since my youngest child is anaphylactic to all nuts and ended up in A&E last year after he accidentally touched a cashew containing energy bar I've obviously not actually tried it though.

Dowser · 08/11/2020 23:43

We miss cheese
Dairy free for health reasons.
Is it really that hard to make a proper cheese?

motorcyclenumptiness · 08/11/2020 23:54

Koko is not terrible - good texture but tastes coconutty. Vegan soft cheese with garlic/herbs is pretty good, esp Scheeze (sp?) but supermarket own too.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 09/11/2020 00:10

Applewood vegan or violife epic mature.
