Nintendo switch for 6 year old

Before now I have managed to kept Christmas fairly cheap in term of presents I have bought.

I don’t go over board but they get a stocking of small things (usually things that are also practical like character socks or headphones) a present from Santa and a present from mum and dad.

Last Xmas I bought my daughter 3-4 LOL dolls as her Santa gift and my son a Pokemon belt with 3 Pokemon and balls. So that’s the level I have been spending at.

This year my son is adamant he wants a Nintendo switch. He has started playing Mario and Zelda on our old Nintendo (30 yrs old) and has seen some relatives with switches.

I just can’t get my head around spending that much money on a child’s gift.

Is that a normal amount that people spend? Will it be worth it? Are switches appropriate for 6 years old.

Trying to figure out if I’m just being tight not wanting to buy it when actually it’ll be well used for a few years.

A switch lite might be an idea unless he really wants to play it on the telly, I mean it's up to you of course but I don't see the harm in buying it him but I would make it very clear he needs to be careful to not break it as I know small children can be a bit clumsy (thinking back to when my aunty bought my cousin an iPad at 6 and he dropped it Grin) it would be a gift that could last a really long time as more games come out etc, he may have it well into his teenage years x

I bought nub 12 year old a switch for his birthday, I justified it because I plan to play on it too and his younger brother will as well. Also he didn’t get a birthday party so that saved some money.

We always spend less than £100 on birthdays and Christmas but due to my DD's 7th birthday falling during the first lockdown we weren't able to celebrate with either friends or family so we decided to get her a Switch to make up for it. We told her it was for her for her birthday but it was also something for the rest of the family to use as well, which she was absolutely fine about. She has played on it nearly everyday since then and absolutely loves it. So I would say that it would be perfect for a 6 year old if you are happy to spend that amount of money.

I did wonder about buying it as a family gift. Someone mentioned you can play family games on it too. I could justify it more if it was something we all used. I know if it is my sons he won’t want anyone else using it .

It's a great console for that age, but too much for one 6 year old. Family gift sounds good idea.

Ah that’s good to hear. I mean I have the money but I wouldn’t describe myself as ‘happy’ to spend it 😂.

We do all enjoy playing the old Nintendo together so maybe I’ll just view it as an investment in family games (like a more expensive board games).

Weve bought our 6 year old a switch, (and 14 yo Sd) for xmas. He also has 3 games for it,along with some books board games and character figures. So far weve spent about £400 on him. It's been a shit year.

I mean I hadn’t even thought about games etc. So thinking about it I’ll need games and a case etc so it will be a lot more than what I originally thought. Eek!

Also sorry to hear you have had a bad year. I hope Xmas is good for you all.

I'm in the same situation. We usually wouldn't dream of spending that much on one child. DS is 8 and wants one so if we do it'll be joint between DS and DD (6). It's hard because there won't be much more to open.

My husband isn’t happy about buying it as a family gift because it’s our son that has asked for it. I think we will all get use out of it, but it’s true that we wouldn’t buy it if he hadn’t asked about it.
