This is my new favourite thread.

War and peace was fantastic.

Also the Forsyte Saga on Amazon is great too if you’re happy to pay a wee bit.

cariadlet · 08/11/2020 14:04

I don't know if they do free trials, but Britbox has loads of period dramas. It also has a lot of old comedies which can be very soothing eg The Good Life and Yes Minister.

1983 Jane Eyre - all the other versions are appalling and miss out most of the dialogue between Jane and Rochester. In the Ruth Wilson/Toby Stephens adaptation they spend 10 minutes of one episode on the first 100 pages of the book (almost a quarter of the book!) and Stephens is far too swoony and dashing and amusing (and they ruin the fortune-telling scene in unrealistic ways).

War & Peace, and the 1995 Middlemarch.

queenofarles · 08/11/2020 14:32

Turn:Washington spies , it’s brilliant! About the American independence, it’s on Amazon

The Alienist on Netflix.

Allias Grace on Netflix too,

I’ve recently watched a couple of shows set in WW2, Home fires and my mother and other strangers , both were nice

That’s all I can think of right now,

InFlagranteDerelicto · 08/11/2020 14:58

I quite like the Samantha Mortin version of Jane Eyre. It's not nearly as easy to get hold of though.

@queenofarles - where did you see Home Fires? I saw some when it was on ITV but I missed the end & then it wasn't on catchup any more. It's only on Amazon if you can pay the extra, I can't. Does it come around for free sometimes? Or will ITV put it on again do you think?

InFlagranteDerelicto · 08/11/2020 14:59

Sorry, it's Samantha Morton, not Mortin.

Cookiecrisps · 08/11/2020 15:03

Another vote for Dickensian. It is excellent and makes me feel Christmassy with the snow, Scrooge etc.

I also love the Forsyte Saga (Damian Lewis version.) Absolutely brilliant drama but I’ve rarely seen it on tv so worth investing in the DVD.

Cookiecrisps · 08/11/2020 15:05

Another good drama is the White Queen based on the books by Philippa Gregory.

Fifthtimelucky · 08/11/2020 15:17

I agree with just about everything already mentioned and have a couple to add:

Barchester Towers from the early 1980s (great cast, including Alan Rickman) and The Jewel in the Crown, also from the 1980s, which is set in India in the 1940s and also has a great cast, including Art Malik.

Both available on DVD.

queenofarles · 08/11/2020 21:01

InFlagranteDerelicto yes it’s on Amazon,

I loved Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson’s Jane Eyre, the scenery and music was so haunting.

I just thought of the Durrells , I really enjoyed .

Sweetener12 · 09/11/2020 08:22

The Tudors are really great, I enjoyed this show twice and I'll be rewatching it, too. The music is one of the best parts of this show, I mean you can even listen to it or use as a background tune for some smartshow 3d presentation and you won't get tired of it.
Spanish Princess is also nice, I've discovered her just a week ago and have only seen a couple of episodes, but it is good, too.
The White Queen is good, but I haven't rewatched it, so maybe now it wouldn't look so good, who knows.

Littlebeach · 09/11/2020 08:33

Second Spanish princess. Lady Chatterley's Lover - Richard Madden version and Parades end with Benedict Cumberbatch. Looking at posts above I need to check out North and South.

moonlight1705 · 09/11/2020 08:37

I came on to say North and South and also Wives and Daughters.

I loved Toby Stephens in Jane Eyre, it is my favourite version. Smile

InFlagranteDerelicto · 09/11/2020 10:15

@queenofarles - Home Fires is currently pay to view. Hopefully it will be included in Prime at some point though, it seems like they change things round occasionally?

LeaveMyDamnJam · 09/11/2020 10:16

Wolf Hall.

bruffin · 09/11/2020 10:21

DS 25 and i sat and watched the 1999 version of David Copperfield yesterday. Really enjoyed it

snowstorm2012 · 09/11/2020 10:23

Posting to save this thread, love period dramas

I actually prefer 1973 version with Sinead Cusack and Michael Jayston who is perfect dark and broody, the Toby stephens one was awful, her childhood is so important to the storyline

BooFuckingHoo2 · 11/11/2020 10:25

Thanks all!

Loved the tudors, does anyone know where I can watch War and Peace?

Needhelp101 · 11/11/2020 11:40

Two great post WW2 dramas are Small Island and The Night Watch. Both I think were BBC.

Also the 2015 version of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, hands down best Christie adaptation ever! Be warned, not at all cosy...

myotherusernameisonholiday · 11/11/2020 12:02

Belgravia which was on ITV earlier this year I think? It was created by Julian Fellows who made Downton. I loved it! Think it may still be on the ITV hub?

OrangeIsTheNewTwat · 12/11/2020 16:30

Just finished watching The Mill, which is on Amazon Prime at the moment. Pretty good.
