This is a genuine question.
What do our armed forces do day to day when not on deployment?
I'm just interested in there days ars for them
Apologies if this sounds a bit clunky

DB goes on lots of exercises in lots of different countries in normal times. He’s in air traffic control so is kept busy the rest of the time!

Sorry for the typos🙈

Quite a lot. They sometimes deploy quite a lot and accrue an amount of down time.

mpsw · 07/11/2020 22:34

Training, so they are ready to deploy.

Maintenance of all the kit they would deploy with.

For the Army, there are always lots actually deployed - currently Somalia, Nigeria, South Sudan, various places training anti poaching squads, Cyprus, Falklands, Gibraltar, Belize, Brunei, various places to train security and anti-terrorist forces, plus what remain in Iraq and Afghanistan

Then anything under the umbrella of MAC-P (or whatever it's called these days) when they are asked to assist civilian organisations in the UK - covid, foot and mouth, sandbagging, Olympics etc

EatTheHamTina · 07/11/2020 22:36

BIL is in the RAF and is always busy. Eyes on the sky 24/7.

mpsw · 07/11/2020 22:41

Oh, and there are various deployments in Europe (Estonia and Poland)

Plus all the international military organisations that need staffing (eg NATO) and military attaches in embassies, and liaison and exchange officers to key partners.

And another major task is operational and scenario planning, and input into next generation of kit and capability.

Cornishmendoitdrekkly · 07/11/2020 22:41

A lot of training and out on exercise. Also lots of physical fitness.
Son is a medic so also does stints in NHS hospitals.
Husband was in RN and spent very little time at home. Our lives were controlled by his duty rota and sea time BUT they are very well paid for their commitment.

Damnloginpopup · 07/11/2020 23:36

Get a brew on, spark up a smoke and go on the piss.

Or train.

movingonup20 · 07/11/2020 23:38

Training, looking after the equipment, exercise (as in keeping fit) dd is an officer and has lots of admin, eg dealing with people who got drunk on their night off and misbehaved it seems

movingonup20 · 07/11/2020 23:40

@Cornishmendoitdrekkly

They are not very well paid! Dd could have earned 1/3 more in industry straight out of university and pay rises aren't great in the military, submariners earn more

There's a lot of daily ongoing maintenance in the vehicles & equipment.

Friend's son is one of the guards at Buck'm palace (they are genuine soldiers).
