  1. Own a home and if so what equity is in it?
  1. Have savings and if so how much?

I’m suddenly in a massive panic about redundancy and job prospects. I have my own home but only 10k in savings, mortgage 750 a month. Just feeling like I’ve fucked up here but then we didn’t know lockdown was going to happen!!

Wherearefoxssocks · 07/11/2020 13:05

I'm 35. So is DP. We have s 1 year old DS. We have decent but not amazing jobs (earn about 75k between us). We bought our house 2 years ago and have maybe 35 - 40k equity (house was 265k. Mortgage is 870 a month).

Savings of about 14k but a lot of that is a wedding fund.

Mamagotskills · 07/11/2020 13:06

33

  1. yes, about 45% equity
  2. around £55k savings but earmarked for extension
ComtesseDeSpair · 07/11/2020 13:06

I have about 30% equity in my home (probably around £150k - London) and about £600 in savings because I’ve just renovated said home. High mortgage (again, London) and single so unlikely to be significantly building my savings for the next couple of years.

You haven’t fucked up. You own a home, you don’t have significant debts. Also, if you’re single, it’s far more difficult to save or overpay your mortgage and it sounds like s lot of the posters who are answering have husbands or partners, which lightens the load.

  1. Own a house but only because I bought it with my husband. We've just bought it, so no equity.

20k personal savings

EekThreek · 07/11/2020 13:07

I'm 37. We rent our home at 1k per month, and 3 children, so we can't afford to save anything. Maybe when we're not paying childcare as much for childcare in a couple of years we could change that.

Have about 18k in debt (combination of cars and personal loan).

If either of us lost our job, we're basically fucked.

HeartZone · 07/11/2020 13:08

foxssoxks wedding fund? Blimey 😏 a lifetime to save gone in a day

HeartZone · 07/11/2020 13:11

Be interesting to read those ten years younger ... graduating with debts of £50k + ....good luck everyone

AnotherEmma · 07/11/2020 13:13

I'm 35 but my financial situation is irrelevant to yours. Comparison is the thief of joy.
Do you have income protection insurance? It's worth looking into it and getting it if you can afford it.
£10k savings is a pretty good buffer, too. Let's say your outgoings are £1,500 / month, it would keep you going for 6 months. (You'd also be able to claim new style JSA if you lost your job, which isn't a huge amount but every little helps. And you might get a small amount of Universal Credit and Council Tax Reduction too.)

TheChosenTwo · 07/11/2020 13:15

36, own a few properties, 50% equity in the house we live in, still paying off the mortgage.
Some decent savings with the dc in mind really but good to know it’s there.
Don’t know how we’ve got to this position really, growing up I never had financial stability and I really appreciate having it now.
We’ve worked and saved for everything we have, had a small inheritance from DH’s granny which we put towards a deposit for the first property we bought after we bought our house we live in now.
I have an okay pension, dh doesn’t have one. The properties are an investment for our future really.

Some friends are in a similar position to us, some better off, some worse. Everyones circumstances are totally different.

SandysMam · 07/11/2020 13:15

How much equity in your home OP?
I think mumsnet can make you feel a bit crap as everyone seems to be loaded but owning a house is something so many people will never do. You have done well to get that, even on your own! Do you try to overpay the mortgage a bit? Look at the calculator on money saving expert, mortgage overpayment calculator, even £50 a month can knock thousands off the interest.

DipSwimSwoosh · 07/11/2020 13:17

All shared with dh.
House worth £150k equity roughly.
£12k savings roughly.

Nowifi · 07/11/2020 13:22

No savings, own home mortgage 1200 a month. If I lose my job I expect we will lose the house within months. Something that worries me every day to be honest!

grassisjeweled · 07/11/2020 13:23

I'm 38 and will give myself the liberty of joining in!

We've around £200k left on our mortgage (live abroad). Bought house 7 years ago. Should be paid off in around 14 years.

Savings? Probably about £10k 'cushion'.

Pay into pension too. No debt, other than the house.

DuzzyFuck · 07/11/2020 13:39
  1. Own my flat with about £120k equity (very very lucky that a hefty inheritance allowed me to buy, and the market here has boomed in the last 2 years).

Only about £5k in savings though. Would be more if I hadn't been cut to part time hours since March.

No pension or investments.

Iseeyoulookingatme · 07/11/2020 13:49

I'm 37 have our own home with £50k equity which is about 60% equity but we are moving so that will soon go down to roughly £30k and 15% equity. We have about £10k savings which are being used for our move so will likely have to save again. I have a Lisa which has about £700 and a couple of smallish pensions from previous jobs, so not much in terms of retirement savings although dh has a pension. I'm not sure how much he has saved into that.
I wouldn't measure yourself against others as everyones personal circumstances are different. If you are worried about the future start saving as much as you can, even if it's £20 a month it all adds up.

wendz86 · 07/11/2020 13:54

Im 34 and don’t own a house . I’m a single parent so struggle to save enough for a deposit as my rent is so high . I do have some savings but not a massive amount .

TeachesOfPeaches · 07/11/2020 14:04

I'm 35, single mum and just bought my own flat in London. Mortgage is £1200 pcm + service charge and ground rent. Have about £10k savings

1940s · 07/11/2020 14:06

Married, equity on our house is approx £200k which is about 30% of house value 40k in savings

thaegumathteth · 07/11/2020 14:51

I'm 39 so a bit older . Own home mortgage about 140/pcm. Equity of about 200k. Investments in shares rather than savings as such although the kids have money for when they turn 21 but that's from grandparents not us.

AcceptanceIsBliss · 07/11/2020 15:16

Only 10k in savings? I have a mortgage that will last until I'm 65 and around 3k in savings. But that is to pay off my car in January so will have to start building up again after that. Not sure why you are panicking to be honest!

WellWeAreFuckedNow · 07/11/2020 15:19

30 so kinda similar. I have 1/3 equity in my house and 4K savings.

Sadhoot · 07/11/2020 15:28

So you have roughly 8 months' of living expenses saved up? I'm assuming for a year, but we recently spent a LOT of money on the house so savings are depleted.

Do you have space to take in a lodger temporarily? Can you look at temporary jobs like Deliveroo or something?

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 07/11/2020 15:28

33 and have a small flat in the SE with 50% equity. Seems pointless as on paper it's loads but we can't do anything with it.

As for savings, been putting £50/mth into a government help to save scheme for a few years now so that's built up nicely.

Brazenhussy0 · 07/11/2020 15:28
  1. Renting. Single. Live alone. Up to eyeballs in debt. No savings left. Self-employed in an industry that’s been decimated by Covid/lockdowns.

I exist to make everyone else feel better about their lives 👍🏻😂 You will be ok, OP. If I’m still by some miracle managing to keep a roof over my head then I have faith that you will as well.

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 07/11/2020 15:33

I'm 36, dh is 34 this month.

  1. No. Dh used to own but ended up in negative equity. Was a 2 bed flat and we have 5dc so we currently rent as cant afford a house big enough in our location and won't move due to schools etc.
  2. Not a lot. Prob around 5k. Interest rates are shit and would rather live life. Savings are currently for disneyworld holiday. We do have 3 months worth of expenses in current account though
