We are planning to have a small family bonfire night party this afternoon (just the ds (10 &8), dh and myself).

What sorts of food or sweets or activities would you suggest to make it fun and special? Star

Firepit, sparklers and toasting marshmallows here tonight.

Zenithbear · 07/11/2020 08:26

Toasting marshmallows.
Make bonfire cakes with matchmakers.

Make sure you check thoroughly for hedgehogs before you light the bonfire.

Off to check recipes for bonfire cakes. We haven't got a fore pit just an old BBQ but that should do the trick.

Where can I get sparklers?

We made chocolate apples, had hot dogs for tea, did sparklers and toasted marshmallows on Bonfire Night. 10yo dd2 said it was amazing.

Lightbubbles · 07/11/2020 08:51

Do you have a good recipe for chocolate apples @lucysmam?

@Lightbubbles dd2 just melted chocolate, dunked the apples (on a skewer to hold them) & threw a load of sprinkles on them. She enjoyed doing it & it doesn't need much supervision apart from the hot pan of water to melt the chocolate over & moving the bowl with chocolate in to the kitchen side :)

We're doing similar tonight but keeping it all indoors cos it's cold and rainy.

We got glow sticks, cake sparklers, some cake flare fountain things, confetti poppers and already have a light projector little thing we got for a couple of £ a while ago. We're having burgers and chips and then making s'mores.

DD (6yo) doesn't know we're going to surprise her when it gets dark.

Lightbubbles · 07/11/2020 09:33

That sounds lovely FatGirlShrinking. Thank you lucysmam we'll give that a go.

It's all about hotdogs round a fire, toasting marshmallows (stick them between chocolate coated biscuits, once they're toasted and you've got a smore!) and sparklers.

lucysmam · 07/11/2020 09:36

If it helps; 2 bars of cheap chocolate (ours was the 30p stuff from Tesco; Lidl's doesn't seem to melt well when we try it) did 4 smallish apples with some left over for a handful of rice crispie cakes :)

We are doing a BBQ fire pit bonfire tonight for DS. We have got sparklers and a couple of fireworks.
We made chocolate apples last night. We’re having hot dogs, mugs of soup, and campfire jacket spuds cooked in the fire. We are having s’mores and marshmallows toasted and possibly going to make cinder toffee (but not sure as it’s a lot of sugary stuff). We are also planning to do bobbing apples. DS is very excited

Talipesmum · 07/11/2020 10:02

We did this last night - nice hotdogs, spicy breaded chicken pieces, mini baked potatoes (small enough to hold, just normal small white spuds with cheese and butter mixed in and made all nice). Then we made toffee apples with the bbc good food recipe and cinder toffee with the leftover toffee. Had never done it before but was v easy and nice! We did marshmallows and sparklers as well and sat round the fire pit, and mulled wine for the adults!

Lightbubbles · 07/11/2020 10:53

I love the idea of mini baked potatoes! Did you make them in the oven? Do you sprinkle the cheese and butter on top as usual?

This looks great too

Yes - rubbed them with a bit of oil and salt, baked them in the oven as normal (though I put them on a tray to make it easier) and when they were done I took them out, split them open a bit on the top, crushing them a bit so it goes fluffy, scooped out a teaspoon or so of the potato, mixed it up with cheese and butter, popped it back into the potato and sprinkled extra cheese on top and back into the oven to go all lovely for about 10-15 mins. Could also put chunks of ham or anything else in it. They were great, and stayed nice and hot inside though we could still eat them with our fingers.
