Hospital admission- terrified he won't make it

Can anyone talk me down, have been awake all night panicking.

My brother is 45, overweight, non smoker or drinker but day 7 of Corona has taken a turn for the worse.

Cough, breathing difficulties and according to blood tests low platelets and saturates(?). Hes been admitted to the covid ward last night.

I've read that a third of patients who are taken to hospital die and I am terrified.

Looking for any advice or support at all,I'm a mess.

I think since the first wave treatment and care has become much better as they now know much more about the virus and what works and what doesn’t.

Wishing all the best for your brother, I have faith in those looking after him that they will do the best they can do.

We know much more now in terms of effective treatment, than we did in April.
He is in the best hands and thank goodness he got help and didn't wait it out.
Sending love.

Just sending you a hug and some Flowers. I'm so sorry @TheLookOfLove - I'm not surprised you're in bits. Sending some healing vibes for your brother as it sounds like he has a tough journey ahead. i don't have helpful advice but I know they have better treatments and have a far greater understanding of this awful illness than they did earlier in the year - I hope this helps your brother and he's receiving the best care x

Sending you hugs and Flowers
While sadly 1/3 of all patients (remember this includes patients in their 80's and 90's) admitted to hospital with Covid-19 pass away, I am almost certain that the percentage is significantly lower for this age bracket. I know two people that were admitted in April with Covid-19, they both needed Oxygen therapy and were home with three days. They are in their 60's and this was at a time when very little was known about the virus. Hopefully, he just needs some oxygen to get his levels up and to help him fight the virus and he will soon be back on the road to recovery. Sending you lots of love xx

It’s understandable that you be scared but he is in the right place and like others have said treatments have come a long way.

Hope you get some positive news soon

The one third figure is since the start of the pandemic. Now fewer people are dying after admission. My sister is an ICU doctor and she said fewer and fewer of her patients are requiring invasive ventilation this time round, she doesn’t even believe it’s because treatment has improved as she refuses to believe steroids can account for such a difference, she thinks the virus itself has changed. I hope your brother is OK. At his age it would be v v v unusual to die even though he is overweight.

Lindy2 · 07/11/2020 06:57

At 45 he's still in the age band where his chances for a good recovery are very high.
Most people do recover even if they need hospital treatment.

I hope he gets well again soon.

TheLookOfLove · 07/11/2020 06:58

Thank you, it's just all so sudden as he seemed to be improving until a week into it. From what I've read, this is when it really ramps up if it's going to.
I'm going to call the hospital soon and see what they say.
He's pretty much the main carer for his young children as well, I am absolutely terrified.

On of my friends was in with Covid he is 43 and he is starting to think about going back to work. It has taken him a while to recover( since last lockdown) and he is still a bit short of breath but he is able to take a walk of about a mile now.

ISwearISwear · 07/11/2020 08:19

A friend of ours with CV was in hospital for two weeks recently. In his 50’s, overweight but pretty fit. He’d been at home suffering for a week or so before being admitted due to breathing problems. He was impressed with the hospital and the treatment they gave him - ‘they threw everything apart from the kitchen sink at him’. (Sorry if that sounds a little sarcastic, it’s not meant to - the hospital really did try everything they could). He was on oxygen all the time he was in but didn’t require ventilation. Now he’s home he has a few follow up appointments for liver and heart function but is improving day by day.

Ask if they will treat him with cholecalciferol (a form of vitamin D that is readily absorbed) in addition to other treatments. Send them these to explain why you are asking. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3690902 and www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7456194/

They may do this anyway, they may not be able to do so even if you ask - but I'd ask.

Who is looking after the children as reassuring him about that wont harm his recovery.

Most people of any age recover from this and survival is better now than in the first wave.

Get the rest of the family on vitamin D supplements if not already taking them.
