4yo Dd won’t wear anything covering her legs

Dd refuses all tights, leggings, trousers etc. Has done for the last 2 years but it wasn’t so bad as she was in her cositoes and at home/inside all winter (because of the cold leg situation she never wanted to go to the park or walk). But now she goes to preschool and is clearly bloody freezing.

This is not new to me as my older 2 have sensory issues and point blank refuse to wear certain clothes at varying points. We’ve tried everything bribery, punishments, natural consequences etc but she (they) won’t ever be moved.

So after searching all day for a long thermal petticoat/slip underdress for a 4 year old (she won’t wear anything round her waist so only wears dresses) I am desperately wondering if any of you know where I can buy one or have some made? I also need over the knee socks for her but can only find up to under the knees.

If you can suggest a a warm under slip and long socks I’d be very grateful. Thanks.

I know @RandomMess I feel like the last 6 years are a blur! Lurching from one ill thought out idea to another crescendo of minor disasters Grin

Glad to maybe have helped.

I was a nightmare to dress for cold weather as a kid, not the same reasons though, I had long legs and "nae waist nor arse" as my mother would say Grin

Not even boyish figure just tiny waist and no backside (the same is most definitely NOT true now unfortunately!)

This was the 70's so no adjustable waist bands back then! Mum could sew but wasn't a fan and trousers can be tricky (especially flares!) so despite being on the tomboyish side I was mostly in maxi dresses and skirts with a variety of vests stitched on, braces and belts used - there are some seriously dodgy pics of me at this stage! Inc one of me on school photo day (which I'd neglected to tell mum of) where I'm wearing a boys shirt (long arms too girls blouses didn't look right), a VERY a-line school skirt held up with...very wide very ORANGE (did I mention it was the 70's?) BRACES!

Hey it was probably character building! Grin

My DD is like this but not so extreme.

We found she would tolerate certain clothes if they had an amazing pattern, she had chosen the items and it never ever had a waistband nor tight bits not scratchy bits. Dresses, dungarees, onesies, snowsuits. God she wore some bloody awful colours / sequins / rainbow / tiger / ironman / peppa pig tat.

Graphista - that image has cheered me right up. I’m a late 70s early 80s child and I wore some very ‘of their time’ outfits. My mum had matching jumpsuits for us made in 1981!

I was always dressed in really fancy impractical pretty clothes (my mum never had any growing up and relived it through me). I was never able to climb or run and was told off if I got anything marked or fell over. I really wanted dd to not be restricted by clothes like I was. I wanted her warm and practically dressed so she could climb and play. It pisses me off she won’t do these things because of her clothing choices - even though I understand to her it’s not a choice. I want her to have a fun and active childhood, not stand round watching others while she looks pretty - which is what I had to do.

You could get that shoe gortex spray for the duffle coat to make it more waterproof. Try ski socks. Seamless long and thick, no heels so size less important. Maybe ski base layer tops for extra warmth? Boy short knickers go up high and cover whole bum.

I wonder if anyone does fleece underskirts. Or flannel. There might be flannel nighties that would do as an underskirt.

MrsKoala · 07/11/2020 11:02

@Bargebill19 The suggestion for nighties as under slips is inspired. I had been googling vests and underwear but hadn’t thought about nighties. She wears warm lol and princess nighties to sleep and I hadn’t considered them because they weren’t white. But once it was suggested on here I realised it doesn’t matter what colour they are as they’ll be under clothes anyway! And she’ll probably love them too. Thanks.

These are really soft and warm, I bet the XXS would make a good petticoat.

They only come in black but these are the Next ones.

Thanks Rainbow and Base. I’ll have a look in the morning when I have a chance.

It may all be academic now as today she has refused any socks or vest (refused knickers for 2 hours saying they all felt ‘wiggly’ Confused ) and only worn an ankle length strappy summer dress and gold sandals to the playpark and 2 hour walk in the woods.
