When did cooking / eating out change?

When I was a child if you went out for a meal (in a long dress with your hair curled because it was a special occasion in th e1970s) the menu might say something was fried, deep fried or shallow fried.

Now menus say 'pan fried' or even 'hand fried'. Ingredients are 'sourced' rather than bought.

Things now have 'pops' of colour or flavour.

Deconstructing things - why?

Open ravioli? Surely it's not ravioli if it is open, and if there is just one isn't it a raviolo?

And what is with the putting all the food (I say all, a miniscule portion) around the side of the plate?

Also there wasn't such a thing as a children's menu, my mum would order something off the menu and then ask for an extra plate and split what ever it was between me and my brother.

And sweet trollies? They are probably not very hygienic but I miss a good sweet trolly.

When did this happen?

you are talking about a 50 year gap, it would be like someone who ate out in the 20s complaining how things were in the 70s.

I agree with pp - things evolve over 45 - 50 years.
