Anyone repainted their kitchen cabinets?

I've just had a quote to have my kitchen units repainted and wondered if anyone has had it done and if it was worth it? The kitchen is 12 years old and all the units and work surfaces are in great condition but I just fancy a change.

Would love to see some before and after pics too.

How much if you don't mind me asking?

TattiePants · 05/11/2020 20:24

@userxx £1600 to be resprayed (I'm in the NE). That's for 8 large pan drawers, 5 full height cupboards and an island with 5 cupboards.

louiseaaa · 05/11/2020 20:24

^^ That, I've been thinking of getting mine painted

I painted my sons kitchen cabinets for him I used Johnstone's primer 1 coat, undercoat 1 coat and interior hard wearing satin paint 2 coats. It was applied with a good quality small roller. Lots of rubbing down and hard work but it looked great when I finished. The cupboards doors were solid oak but the sides were just laminate.

I did and I love them.

I’ve just done mine in a soft dove grey, B&Q own brand, £20ish. No sanding or priming, just slapped it on and they look fab 😊

NotAnother0ne · 05/11/2020 20:40

@Springcatkin is the finish durable? Would the paint chip off if you knocked it and can the cupboards be washed? Unfortunately I'm very far away from you.

@AbbeyRoadNW8, I don't think I'm brave enough to do it myself! I'm going to have a go at painting some bedroom furniture instead.

@user1471427614 wow, that makes such a difference! Great job.

Yes the finish is durable and washable and no chips in 10 months since it was done. Used farrow and ball paint
I know you are a distance away but thought the before and after pictures might help Smile
It makes a huge difference - we went from wood to cream - the whole room looks so much lighter

NotAnother0ne · 05/11/2020 21:00

Yes, it's really helpful seeing the transformation pictures. I'm going the other way, from cream and wood to (possibly) navy.

I've been told MSP [MultiSurfacePaint] paint is very good for kitchen doors. Doesn't need sanding and great finish using a foam roller. It comes in quite a few colours....google it for suppliers.

In my first flat back in the 90s I painted my kitchen cupboards and the tiles using matt emulsion a la Changing Rooms, however, I did give them 3 coats of clear varnish on top so they wouldn’t chip, lasted years until I could afford a total refit.

HoldMyLobster · 06/11/2020 02:32

We had ours done about 12 years ago and they still look good. From green to a lightish blue.

A friend did them - removed them, then repainted them in the garden. No idea how or what he used but totally worth it.

Bearlyclearly · 06/11/2020 06:02

I painted mine 4 months ago and so far not a single scratch or problem. I used Frenchic alfresco paint, cleaned the units in sugar soap, a light sand down and then 3 coats of paint. No primer or sealer was needed. I also painted the tiles in the same paint range.

@Bearlyclearly That looks great and the before photo looks very much like my cupboards. How much did it coast to replace the worktops?

Bearlyclearly · 06/11/2020 08:20

@userxx I didn’t replace the work tops I used DC Fix which is a sticky back plastic to cover them. It cost me £30 for 3 rolls, I was revamping on a budget

userxx · 06/11/2020 08:27

@Bearlyclearly bloody hell, that's fantastic!!

NotAnother0ne · 06/11/2020 14:52

@Bearlyclearly, thanks for sharing and it looks amazing, like a completely new kitchen.
