Taking it early would then depend entirely on what they will replace it with. The very worst thing would be for her to repeat or do no maths for a year.

Does she want to do, can they offer meaningful Additional/Further Math?

I thought taking random GCSEs easy wasn't a good thing nowadays, is more credit given for getting good grades when doing them all in the same year when in comes to uni places?

murmurgam · 04/11/2020 12:18

I took my GCSE a year early in a state comprehensive. I started A level in Year 11. It did mean I was left with a choice of staying at school for sixth form or wasting a year if I'd gone to the local college instead. So definitely look into what happens afterwards.

Actually it depends on the paper if Me Janice an A grade but if Statistics or Decision then A/B. It depends on what other students get.

amusedbush · 04/11/2020 12:28

I worked in university admissions previously and sometimes saw someone who sat a GCSE early, then subsequently sat the A Level a year before the other two/three. This negatively affected their application because it was viewed as two sittings of exams, even though it wasn't a resit.

Just something to bear in mind for the future.

My younger sister took O level Maths at 13. She spent next 2 years doing extra O level in Marine Biology. She got a B in Maths and I think as he would have got an A if had 2 more years tuition and practise. She did not do A level Maths as only a B grade so continued in subjects she got A grade in.

MinnieMountain · 04/11/2020 12:45

It depends how it’s handled. And what’s the point. A friend at university sat his early, got put off and did Law for his degree.

DH didn’t do that and has a Maths degree.

Lardlizard · 04/11/2020 14:00

Ok all good points I will discuss with the school
It’s just an average state comp

Am surprised an average state comp wants a student to sit maths early. I would have thought it would really mess up their Progress 8 (or does that look at a single sitting)?

Lardlizard · 04/11/2020 14:58

She did go to an exceptionally good state primary though

Oh sorry I'd missed it's a stealth boast because clearly 96% is a good mark. I don't believe op is so totally clueless that she doesn't know of 96/100 is good or bad

titchy · 04/11/2020 16:33

OP still hasn't said whether it was higher or foundation tier though!

Lardlizard · 04/11/2020 16:33

Oh yeah I thought it was awful !!
I wanted to know what grade it would equate to
Say an 8 or 9
It’s clearly not 4 !

That’s because I don’t know !

You still haven't clarified what it was. Was it an actual GCSE paper or something the school knocked together on a limited selection of the syllabus. Getting 96% on a higher GCSE paper in Year 9 would be pretty exceptional. Getting 96% on a school assessment for start of Year 9 would be good, but not necessarily amazing. The best mathematicians (talking top few in Set 1) at DC's school would routinely be getting close to 100% in every school test.

Well if it was a foundation paper it would only be a 5!

Evidently she doesn't get her brains from you.

whynotwhen · 04/11/2020 18:44

Ouch PP that was uncalled for

Lardlizard · 04/11/2020 19:27
