Any dressmakers around?

I have a wrap around skirt where the belt tie passes through a sort of button hole that is reinforced with a kind of metal eyelet thing.

Anyway, it has come off (please see pictures). Is there any way I can fix this without specialist equipment? I've tried just clicking it back together (it won't) and tried bashing it with a hammer but to no avail.

Alternatively, is there any way I can reinforce the 'buttonhole' part so I can still wear the skirt?

Thanks in advance 🙂

You could buy a new one, try eBay : metal grommet oval and see what size suits.

Can you sew round the edge of the hole, to reinforce it?

I would embroider around the hole with a buttonhole stitch so that it's reinforced.

I would separate the black fabric around the existing buttonhole and slide a piece of iron-on stabiliser into position, keeping it as flat as possible. Maybe even two pieces, if it's lightweight. Then fuse with a hot iron (suited to black fabric type) but protect with other fabric ...not sure of fabric content so you might have to check, but lots of RTW clothes have a lot of poly. Leave to cool.

Then stitch around the buttonhole with a straight stitch before commencing a row of buttonhole stitch.

If you want to try re-installing the metal grommet you might need to rearrange the teeth with some pliers so they lock into position...be careful as they might snap off due to metal fatigue. Most of these grommets in high-use areas have a tendency to fail after a while.

Lastly, the suggestion above of buying a new grommet is a good option, but depends if you can find one the right size and how long you wish to wait for it to arrive. A hand-worked buttonhole is what I would do.

Hope some of this helps? ;-)
