Stressful interview

Had initial chat for job I really wanted - feel a bit sick as it was fine but didnt go as well as I wanted. Repeated myself and feel like I floundered a bit.

Hiring manager walked me through the role itself (as is quite unusual) and told me the process / advised me on how I should handle the next stage (if I were to get there) - which I guess is positive? However he also made a few comments around now being a great time to interview in this industry with competitors (awkward). Didn't feel overwhelming positivity around how I'd done or that I'd done my best.

Anyone have any tips? Feel really disappointed! Will eat choc and try to forget my sorrows! :)

Sympathies, I hate the post-interview feeling, bit like when you've just sat an exam and are waiting for the results. I think all you can do is try and not think about it any more, it's done, you did your best and now it's out of your hands. It always feels much worse in your own head, as you replay the interview and overanalyse every little verbal diarrhoea incident or comment that didn't come out quite right or stutter or awkward pause to the point where you convince yourself you are a socially incompetent buffoon who should live under a rock and never speak to anyone in a professional context ever again (or is that just me? Grin ).

The interviewer probably didn't notice or care about any of that TBH, speaking as an interviewer the vast majority of people come across absolutely fine in interviews, some nerves/awkwardness is totally standard and not something that makes any particular difference - the choice of who to hire/progress to next stage usually just comes down to qualifications/experience and/or who is the best fit for the team rather than who was 'slickest' at interview (in fact I personally am a bit suspicious of people who are too smooth and confident at interview, admittedly from a small-ish sample, the people in that category I have hired have turned out to be either bullshitters or pathologically unpleasant people or both!)

Maybe try and distract yourself, as you are doing with the choc Grin
Did he say when he'd get back to you? I guess either way you can ask for some feedback so you can improve for next time?
