What to serve with chocolate fondue

Someonesayroadtrip · 02/11/2020 20:16

I fancy getting a chocolate fondue set to do over Christmas, maybe Christmas Eve or Boxing Day, to do with the children. Just wondering what people like to dip? Or any recommendations.

I saw Thornton's sell chocolate for dipping which I thought I'd try that. But other than strawberries and a Marshmallow’s I can't think what I could get to dip.

Shortbread?

Ginandplatonic · 02/11/2020 20:19

Cut up bits of cake - has to be a dense-ish cake like Madeira, cut up bananas.

Alexindiamondarmour · 02/11/2020 20:20

I was coming on to also say bananas. Mmmm

Little shortbread biscuits! Pretzels - salt in chocolate is so good. Dates. Nuts. Slices of apple. Bits of crystallised ginger. Dried mango - this one is lovely, and also convenient because the pieces are usually long and so easy to dip.

Are you and your kids any good with chopsticks? Because they make dipping small things so much easier!

FlibbertyGiblets · 02/11/2020 20:21

Amaretti biscuits
Shortbread fingers
Pineapple fingers
Orange segments
Pretzels (yes, really!)

FlibbertyGiblets · 02/11/2020 20:22

Dried mango is a very good call.

LetterFromLorah · 02/11/2020 20:22

Grapes are surprisingly good with chocolate fondue!

Wowcherarestalkingme · 02/11/2020 20:22

Grapes, pretzels, orange segments, glacé cherries, trifle sponges... I’m so hungry now

Someonesayroadtrip · 02/11/2020 20:23

Now I definitely need to get one, I love these ideas. Thanks everyone.

Kids haven't used chopsticks but be a good opportunity to learn.

So many options I think I'll make up a but of a hamper. 😊

Pretty much any fruit works. We sometimes use frozen raspberries and cherries. The warmth semi defrosts them so they are soft enough to eat. a bit like the Ivy's iced berries.

You might want to invest in some training chopsticks for the DC if you don't want a fondue full of fruit Grin They could be a fun stocking filler.

We use the savers chocolate from the supermarket for fondue, melt it with a dash of milk or cream, yummy, no need to use expensive Thornton’s chocolate I don’t think.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 02/11/2020 21:21

frozen raspberries are really really good! As a pp said, the freezey and the warm is perfect.

amaretti would be good...also biscotti

turkish delight? homemade fudge?

cubes of marzipan???

those super fancy not maraschino not glace cherries? Or frozen ones....

you have done it now, I spotted a forgotten fondue in the back of my cupboard the other day.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 02/11/2020 21:23

you could get those beginner type chopsticks with a spring in...very easy so long as you don't press too hard!

grapes
slices of apple
banana
strawberries
marshmallows

HollyBollyBooBoo · 03/11/2020 09:40

M&S pretzel sticks, mini doughnuts, strawberries, wafer biscuits.

Melt chocolate with some double cream and a squidge of golden syrup - delish!

tsmainsqueeze · 03/11/2020 10:08

I use the thorntons chocolate in our chocolate fountain as you don't need to add oil , yuk !
When i make ganache for cake i use basic ,cheapest chocolate from any supermarket , the lidl one is very good , milk or dark , better than their more expensive one.
I chop madeira cake, strubwaffel ??i think they are called , -the thin waffle style biscuit with caramel between ,tinned mandarin orange, marshmallow's , preztel and of course strawberries.

wowfudge · 03/11/2020 10:15

Cubes of toasted marzipan or the little Spanish marzipan figures you can get - already toasted. Dried figs. Dates. Fruit bread cubes or pieces of cinnamon bun. Brioche cubes. Dried apricots. Slices of apple and pear - toss in lemon juice to stop them going brown.

yetanothernamitynamechange · 03/11/2020 10:44

mini doughnuts

my head.

Trisolaris · 03/11/2020 10:48

Ginger biscuits
Raspberries

Quarantiming · 03/11/2020 10:51

Bananas
Clementine/ mandarin
Apples - something like granny's, not sweet ones
Strawberries
Persimon
More bananas - kids' favourite!
