Do your kids wear poppies?

OP posts:
blobbyface · 04/11/2020 20:09

No - neither do I

Sheknowsaboutme · 04/11/2020 20:09

No, nor do i.

But that doesn’t mean I dont support it.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 04/11/2020 20:14

Yes and so do I.

SionnachRua · 04/11/2020 20:21

I’m really sorry for my ignorance, but can someone explain the Ireland/ poppy wearing issue? Thank you.

They are unpopular here as the funds used would go towards supporting those who fought against us or were active in NI - Bloody Sunday in Derry etc. Would honestly rather shit in my hands and clap.

Though tbf I don't know that I'd say it's unpopular exactly, that implies there's much debate about them here...it just isn't done.

I'm Irish and I never even heard of wearing a poppy until I moved to the U.K. I STILL get asked why I don't wear one HmmI'm fed up of explaining. Parents at the school I worked in tried to force me to wear one...made me not want to even more to be honest Angry

Wtf? Why did they even care if you were wearing one?
fitforfun1 · 04/11/2020 20:58

@MindyStClaire Part of it was to fit in and also to lead by example for the kids. So they said...

equuscaballus · 04/11/2020 21:13

No and I resent the pressure on my kids (and myself) to wear them.

I see it as virtue signalling.

I donate without taking a poppy and I make sure my kids are educated as to why we attend remembrance Sunday. I feel this is enough.

Griefmonster · 04/11/2020 21:16

Mine eldest did when part of scouts services on remembrance Sunday but otherwise no. I do but my DH doesn't.

OohKittens · 04/11/2020 21:18

No and I don't donate either.

Blueshmoo · 04/11/2020 21:19

No, Irish family

stargirl1701 · 04/11/2020 21:20

Yes. DD1 wears the Scouts Poppy and DD2 wears the Guiding Poppy.

Rockbird · 04/11/2020 21:20

Yes always, their choice.

AlwaysLatte · 04/11/2020 21:22

I always buy them the poppy pins with the dates on (I get them for the whole family) as they're easier to pin to their clothes, but this year my DS13 didn't want me to put it in his blazer.

LedaandtheSwan · 04/11/2020 21:23

No.

AlwaysLatte · 04/11/2020 21:23

With 98% of the population under 12, for around 24 seconds, yes. And then they're lost, Francesca's complaining that Alfie has picked up her poppy off the floor, Freddie's got five shoved up his left nostril and the remainder of Miss Bentley's class come out at the end of the day to say 'I need another £2 for a poppy tomorrow'.
Get the metal pins. They stay stuck! Smile
