Reading books for a Yr 7 who LOVES reading

Having to isolate as a family, so had to go and pick up DS this morning from school - he'd only been in for 3 hours! Sad

Have spoken to the school this afternoon and they're not brilliantly set up for students who are having to WFH, although they're working on it.

DS will be sent homework to complete, but as he loves to read (and reads far beyond his age), can you recommend any titles that he may enjoy? (I don't want him to sit and play computer games for 2 weeks!)

There are various lists online that I can have a look at but is there anything that has completely blown your year seven's mind?

Thank you@

Not a #humblebrag re: reading age, BTW. He would actually spend the entire 14 days online if I let him get away with it. I want to lock his devices so he can get stuck into a good book! Mwah ha ha!

Harry Potter series
Percy Jackson books?

I saw this set in Costco the other day, appreciate you may not be able to get to Costco and get the actual set, but the titles are visible for ideas (my DD is only 6 but I can’t wait for her to be into these!)

My DS1 is Year 7 & also loves reading, when he can be dragged away from screens Hmm He is now into the YA section at the library (where I work) as he had worked his way through all the yojnfeg books he liked. Here are some of the books he has enjoyed reading or I hope he will enjoy.

  • Wonder & all the spin-offs
  • Sophie's World
  • The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series (as he enjoys watching Red Dwarf with us)
  • The Demon Headmaster series (was also on CBBC last year)
  • any Michael Morpurgo books
  • David Walliams books
  • The Diary of Anne Frank

My brother's famous bottom series- hilarious!
Anything by Dick King Smith
Winnie the Witch - also funny!
Pugs of the frozen north
Charlotte's Web

The OP is asking about a Year 7 child so age 11 or 12. Not a 7 year old. While these are lovely choices, they’re a bit young for a Year 7, that’s why I’m wondering if you’re thinking it’s for a 7 year old Smile

My son currently loves the Young Bond series by Charlie Higson. He has pretty much read his way through the YA section of our library. If your son likes fantasy, then I guess The Hobbit etc and all the Philip Pulman books. Before that he was obsessed with the Young Samurai series.

Tournesol · 02/11/2020 19:18

My DS now in year 8 but last year loved the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare.

Tidypidy · 02/11/2020 19:53

@LittleRa whoops! All good books mind!

cheeseismydownfall · 02/11/2020 19:53

Adrian Mole? My DS (Y8) tore through them over the summer (although he slowed down a bit by The Prostate Years lol)

He read Artemis Fowl a couple of years ago but it's a favourite he keeps going back to.

Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan (seems to be his favourite of the different series).

cheeseismydownfall · 02/11/2020 19:56

A few others...

The Private Blog of Joe Cowley by Ben Davis

Half My Facebook Friends Are Ferrets

One Seriously Messed Up Week/Jack Samsonite

Those three are definitely not highbrow but he enjoyed them all.

LongBlobson · 02/11/2020 19:57

Dd y7 has just devoured the Hunger Games series.

MrsHamlet · 02/11/2020 20:03

The edge chronicles by Chris riddell and someone else I can recall

Jackparlabane · 02/11/2020 20:10

Terry Pratchett - especially the Guards series and Mort. The YA ones dated horribly.
Hitchhiker
The Hobbit (and LotR)
Who let the gods out?
Narnia (Magicians Nephew, LWW, PC and Dawn Treader, possibly Silver Chair, anyway)
101 Dalmatians, Hardy Boys, James Herriot,PG Wodehouse...

usethedata · 02/11/2020 20:11

My DD has just loved the hunger games books and the wonder series

Charles11 · 02/11/2020 20:20

My ds loved Refugee and Grenade by Alan Gratz.
He also went through all of Dan Smiths books for children. His favourites were Boy X, Big Game and Below Zero.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 02/11/2020 20:27

Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver (it's a series too if he enjoys it, so you don't have to think as hard!).

The House on Falling Star Hill by Michael Molloy

Eragon by Christopher Paulini (that's a nice gateway to high fantasy)

The Hobbit

The Jenny Nimmo Children of the Red Prince series.

I don't know how all your Year 7s love The Hunger Games! I was in my twenties when I read it and it gave me nightmares.

Jessicabrassica · 02/11/2020 20:31

Have a look at believathon too. It's a middle - grade reading challenge but loads of prompts. Y7 here enjoying sherlock Holmes and agatha christie. Mortal engines?

ScarletPimpernel97 · 02/11/2020 20:38

The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness by Michelle Paver. Great books!

LongBlobson · 02/11/2020 21:50

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams I wasn't going to let her read them for that reason. But some of her friends were, so I re-read the series myself and decided it was totally fine.

(When I was that age I read Children of the Dust and that traumatised me for life! )

ShakeaHettyFeather · 03/11/2020 08:17

The Trials of Morrigan Crow and two sequels so far
Roman Mysteries

Scotstar85 · 03/11/2020 17:59

Some fab recommendations there! Thanks so much!
