My DS doesn't like to read!

My 7yo DS does not like reading.
Tonight is the first time ever I've seen him reading a book on his own accord , it's one of these small books that came with a happy meal.
so I'm thinking perhaps he needs really short stories, perhaps the proper size books seem too much and that's why he won't even try...? I don't know.
I loved to read as a kid and just wish he would too.
Any ideas how to get him into it and short stories recommendations would be very welcome, thanks

Try 13 storey Treehouse, maybe? Or we used to subscribe to a short story anothology by post, a mix of comic, short stories and non fiction, called Adventure Box

It took lockdown for my 9 year old to start reading. He started by re-reading a series I'd read to him as a bedtime story, then latched onto a new series, which he has finally started reading for enjoyment.

What does he like? I'd find books (fact or fiction) linked to something he likes - cats in our case!

Suggestions my older bookworm liked at that sort of age:
Magic treehouse - different to the 13 story tree house mentioned above. Very thin chapter books and very formulaic that cover all sorts of time periods and geographical areas.
Dinosaur cove
Astrosaurs

Comics (beano), graphic novels, Guinness book of records are all alternative ways of reading.

Give him some money - go to a charity shop (or book shop) - get HIM to choose some books he likes without any guidance from you.

That's what I did with mine - I was surprised with what they chose - a large Atlas was one choice - but they chose 'em and they read 'em.

Harry Potter did the trick here! I bought the first book to read myself to see if I thought it was suitable, and DS1 got to it first. Never looked back, devoured them all! I will be forever grateful to JK Rowling 😊

Depending on reading level -- Frog and Toad books or Harry Potter.

Most people don't dislike reading, they just haven't found what they like to read yet.

Try books with pictures breaking up the text. Wimpy kid and Tom Gates are good. The MCD books are great too if you have more of them (try charity shops).

Another vote for comics
Dog Man series by Dave Pilkey
Tom Gates books.

Thanks for all the suggestions, i will be checking out these books. He has Dog Man and doesn't want to read it. But he does quite factual books like the guiness world records etc..

Me too and I emailed her to tell her as much. Thank goodness for Ms. Rowling.

Asda have these giant advent calendars that have little books inside. It's £10 for 24 stories and they have disney/ avengers/ marvel ones.
