I'm watching Band of Brothers again (what a work of art).

Rewatching this after first seeing it years ago. We bought the box set and everything.

Absolutely wonderful series, although of course horrific.

I forgot just how many big names are in this, every episode is like "oh looks there's whatsisname...." inc the Hot Priest from Fleabag, Tom
Hardy, Michael Fassbender...

The one episode I vividly remember is called Why We Fight. For a while, whenever I'd catch it on the telly, it would be this episode over and over. Apparently very true to form and utterly heart breaking.

These poor men.

We rewatch annually and it's stunningly made. Brilliant compelling tv.

This was my Dad's favourite box set. He died a couple of years ago and we played the music at his funeral.

I saw it for the first time about a year ago - my son put me onto it. It’s amazing, very well made, acted, the actors IMO are very well cast. Several of them weren’t even American and they got the accents down pretty well, says me as a non-American! I got a bit obsessed and read several books on the subject. A few of the men wrote their own memoirs afterwards. There’s also a lot of material online, interviews and clips of reunions, mostly but not all on you tube. I knew a fair bit already about Normandy, but mostly from the British POV - my uncle was in the British forces that landed on D Day. I knew much less about the Ardennes and Dutch campaigns, apart from that the allies screwed up over the battle of the Bulge. Wikipedia’s got entries for lots of the men. I think most of the men are dead now - the only one who’s still alive AFAIK is Ed Shames who is 98 and was a more peripheral character, in at the beginning but then was promoted sideways to a different platoon (I think that’s right - a different son has just explained platoons, companies etc yet again and again it’s not really gone in). Definitely something to see again. There’s also The Pacific which is obviously a different bit of the war, different characters, battes etcetera. It’s done very well too though is (possibly?) more harrowing. I’m not sure how you judge that really as WW2 was dreadful for so many people.

We have watched it this year on a new telly with a fancy sound system and it really does sound like those high pitched flying bullets are coming at you from behind.

I think I'm going to get the books for husband - any reccies?

There's an excellent you tube channel called The History Underground, in the latest episodes 99 and 100 he visits Toccoa and the training ground at Currahee. He talks about the series and the history of E Company. Well and truly worth watching as are all of the episodes on the channel.

Another vote for one of the most televisual masterpieces ever made... it's an incredible series.

We had a holiday in Normandy a few years ago and re-watched it while there - also visiting the museums and relevant sites. So much to see and learn there!

We went for a walk in the area where they parachuted in for the D-Day landings near St Mere Eglise and fought 'The Battle of the Hedgerows'... something crunched under my feet and it was two American bullet casings made in Misouri in 1943. I bought them home and they are now framed on the wall with a little postcard of 101st Airborne parachuting in!
