Hi

I'm losing weight by counting calories but need some low carb and filling ideas that are also low carb and sugar. It's very tricky! Can anyone help? Im pre diabetic so have to be careful.

Thanks

I did the low carb boot camp and it was joyless and slightly nauseating.

I also broke two teeth eating fecking pork scratchings, so it was also the most expensive diet I've ever done.

Rice paper rolls

Have you thought about the paleo diet. It’s low carb and low/no dairy but isn’t as restrictive as the Atkins type diets. The low dairy helps with the cheese and cream calories. Portions of meat, fruit and veg don’t matter at all. I genuinely find that after a few days, the hunger changes.
Good snacks are chopped fruit and veg, cold meats and home made veg crisps. Good luck. 👍🏻

If you can get hold of Broghies - they’re really good. I know you say you eat too much cream, but I find it a good way to keep blood sugars low. Also full fat Greek yoghurt - not the Greek-style.

Nosuchthingastoomuchcheese · 01/11/2020 11:39

What are broghies?

I’ve not been able to get them for a while. I believe you can get them in Iceland but there’s none near me. They’re kind of a big prawn cracker in texture - I think it’s the crunch that does it for me!!

Nosuchthingastoomuchcheese · 01/11/2020 12:47

Oh they do sound good!

Oatcakes might make a good snack.

Pertella · 01/11/2020 12:54

@wowfudge

Nonsense Pertella - Fast 800 and Blood Sugar Diet disprove this. They are supposed to be followed for a short time and the benefits are many for those with Type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, to much visceral fat.
Disproves what? Simply cutting carbs and calories doesnt work if you aren't getting enough fat and protein in your diet.

The Fast 800 works because it provides enough fat and protein to regulate your appetite.

Feminist10101 · 01/11/2020 12:56

@Pertella

Are you following a low-carb AND low-cal diet?
That’s what the Blood Sugar Diet is, often recommended for diabetics.

It absolutely isn’t low fat though. Nor does it advocate snacking.

Feminist10101 · 01/11/2020 12:57

@midsomermurderess

Oatcakes might make a good snack.
They’re not in any way low carb. Hmm
Feminist10101 · 01/11/2020 12:59

@AntiHop

My suggestions are: Sticks of vegetables (maybe with a little bit of hummus) Danone light and free yogurt (the only yoghurt I've found that is sugar free and fat free) Slices of quorn
It can’t be sugar free as it will have lactose. It may not have added sugar, but the sweetness will prompt the body to produce insulin as if it is sugar anyway, progressing the diabetic issues, not helping them.
dolphinpose · 01/11/2020 13:01

Do you like Japanese food? Some very low cal low carb options there:
instant miso soup (about 60 cals a packet)
seaweed thins (20 cals a packet).
Or
A slice of protein bread (there's a thread about it on here) toasted with marmite.
chicken breast sliced and rolled up in iceberg wrap with grated carrot and spring onion with a bit of sesame soy and garlic dressing

Nosuchthingastoomuchcheese · 01/11/2020 13:11

Dolphinpose I love those ideas!

Lindahl's Kvarg are my go to snack. It is Quark so they are high protein, low fat and low sugar. The flavours are nice too (the pink one is my fav!). I think they are about 90 cals per 150g pot.

ZoominMoomin · 01/11/2020 13:14

Hit enter too soon, sorry - I meant to say, you can get 4 for £3 in Asda, or they are normally about 95p each elsewhere!

Nosuchthingastoomuchcheese · 01/11/2020 13:17

What are they? A yoghurt?

OP posts:
ZoominMoomin · 01/11/2020 13:18

Yeah they are like a yoghurt. Very creamy but have an airiness to them, a bit like a mousse, so they aren't heavy. I don't like regular yoghurt or other quark, but these are so nice!

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 01/11/2020 13:21

'Seriously low carb' bread. On Amazon. Pricey but both low cal and carb.
Babybel cheese.
Slices of precooked chicken.

CoffeeDay · 01/11/2020 13:27

I would make a "snacky plate" of any of the below:

  • Nuts
  • Cucumber
  • Mature cheddar cut into very small pieces so it takes longer to eat
  • Tuna & sweetcorn mashed with a simple dressing of vinegar, salt & olive oil
  • Apple slices
  • Peanut butter*
  • Hummus
  • Strawberries
  • Greek Yoghurt*
  • 80% Dark Chocolate*
  • Avocado*
  • Bacon*

Apples, sweetcorn & carrots contain sugar but also lots of fibre which makes them better than pure carbs like biscuits or sugar. I find you often need something slightly sweet when grazing and getting that from sweetcorn or apple is much better than cookies. Strawberries are surprisingly low carb, and a great substitute for sweets since they feel dessert-y.

*Not really low cal but they are really filling and tasty so you end up eating less compared to empty calories from crisps or sugary snacks.

Nosuchthingastoomuchcheese · 01/11/2020 13:52

Thanks coffeeday. Could also have ham or cooked meat or fish. Great idea.

Noideawottodo · 01/11/2020 15:50

I don't like the Lindahls ones, they have sweeteners in. The Biotiful Kefir + protein are gorgeous, filling and only 93 calories. No sugar though so you have to like slightly sour things

BIWI · 01/11/2020 16:36

I did the low carb boot camp and it was joyless and slightly nauseating.

I also broke two teeth eating fecking pork scratchings, so it was also the most expensive diet I've ever done.

Hmm. Why was that? It's supposed to be about enjoying good, tasty and wholesome food - so shouldn't have been joyless. What on earth were you eating?!
Noideawottodo · 01/11/2020 19:40

I didn't enjoy it BIWI, sorry.

BIWI · 01/11/2020 20:29

No need to apologise! Grin

I just wondered what you were eating though, given that there's so much lovely food that you can have.
