Help! Should I be bleeding this much?

itsgettingweird · 01/11/2020 08:32

I started having heavy periods about 2 years ago. First 2-3 days I could flood a tampon in an hour for a few hours and then 2-3 hours sometimes.

Started mini pill December 2019 but it seemed to make things worse. Prolonged my periods, they were more painful and started light and got heavier rather than the other way around.

In June I started spotting daily with extremely heavy bleeding in between. Constant pelvic pain etc.

It was manageable but in July it got worse and I had northisterone to stop extreme bleeding. 24 hours after I stopped it it started again and I was given more and 5 days into the course fitted with the mirena coil.

24 hours after I stopped I had a period for 5 days that was normal.

My cycle went to 25 days and my periods were 10-14 days long but manageable despite still being on heavy side 2-3 days in.

My period didn't come after 25 days but on day 29 I had a light bleed that lasted 8 hours.

Following day I had some residual cramping that didn't require pain relief.
My period started again around 8pm and by 8.30 I was flooding through a tampon every 15 minutes with large clots.
I found some tranaxamic acid I had at home and took 2 but it continued until 3.30am where I was flooding and the losing huge clots when I went to the loo.
Then my coil came out.

The bleeding stopped after an hour and no bleeding at all until 8pm again last night.

Again every 15-20 minutes at times I'm flooding through a pad and then losing clots on the toilet. Some clots are as large as a pot of jelly.

I had bad cramps during night that ibuprofen, paracetamol plus and a heat bag didn't negate.

I've taken a northisterone this morning as I was prescribed some to keep just in case and can take 3 a day.

Has anyone experienced this? I'll ring GP first thing tomorrow morning but I want to know what I'm asking for and the timescales to be pushing for (I know the pandemic is affecting things).

I was already aneamic after the summer and so this blood loss has made me feel so tired.

How old are you? They wouldn't do an ablation on me till I was over 40 in case I wanted another child. I did everything I could to persuade them but they weren't having it. I was a single mum though so it may be different if you're married/in a LTR.

itsgettingweird · 01/11/2020 20:03

I am 40. And my ds has a genetic condition and so wouldn't have any more kids anyway and that's logged on my notes as ds is still in clinical trials

itsgettingweird please ask to be referred to a gynae who specialises in endometriosis. Ablation is not a treatment for adenomyosis and if you have a very thick endometrium you should be investigated for endo as they often go hand in hand.

Well bang on 7.30pm the bleeding started again. It really is like a 24 hour clock!

I had took 2 transaxamix acid, 2 ibruorofen and my last northisterone of the day.

Still extremely heavy with awful cramps discomfort but with more ibuprofen and trans acid it was lighter than last 2 nights.

Waiting for a GP call. I told receptionist it was an emergency and needed a call as soon as possible. X

But what I'd love to know is if it actually weighs more a thick lining or maybe enlarged uterus.

I've lost 5.5lbs since Friday morning!

Please make sure you get seen. Your iron levels should be checked, as well as everything else mentioned above. Do not let them fob you off. This is urgent.

Karatema · 02/11/2020 10:20

Please tell your GP everything you have told us and let us know how you get on. This is serious so do not let your GP fob you off!

itsgettingweird · 02/11/2020 12:37

Well I told GP everything.

Have to continue northisterone daily until they can refit a coil. Of course they can't refit that until new year at earliest due to lockdown.

Mefanamic acid for pain and transexnemic acid too for 4 days every time I bleed.

This is because I've stopped bleeding with in 3-5 of taking northisterone previously and so the plan is it'll keep me from bleeding.

Still insistent it takes a year for coil to work and will stop bleeding in 80% of woman within 12 months.

I will be insisting the start the year from August when it was first fitted as I'm not losing one every 2-3 months and starting clock again.

I'm still bleeding very lightly now during day which I haven't been doing past 2 days so I hope this it all slowing down and becoming more of a flow than a tap switched on and off every 12 hours.

I pointed out I'm off work and if this carries on I could keep being off work which of course will then get to warning stage etc.

So I'm going to give these drugs a chance.

But if this happened again so severely I'm going straight to a and e (pandemic or not)

Hmm Honestly, they should be doing it now. You are losing a lot of blood and if this will help, it should be done.

The northisterone should have same effect.

If when I stop trans acid and Mef acid it starts heavy again I'll be ringing back up.

If I bleed lightly daily for a long time that's exactly what I did on the coil.

My cycle has been 25 days and period lasting 11-14 days.

Just remember, the squeaky wheel gets the oil and certainly when it comes to ‘women’s’ heath issues you need to be persistent and vocal in your complaints to get any type of actual treatment. It’s exhausting but the only way to get what you need. I was fobbed off for years... literal years... until I failed to get pregnant and was investigated for infertility, only then did I get diagnosed with adeno and Endo, no one listened when I was bleeding like you are now and I was just consistently fobbed off with iron tablets. Tell the gp that it’s affecting your ability to work, your ability to look after your child, And your ability to function on a daily basis. Keep telling him or her that on repeat till they take you seriously

itsgettingweird · 02/11/2020 21:40

I will.

Like clockwork 7.30pm came and cramps started and clots again.

That's even with northisterone, transexamic acid and mefenamic acid.
The pain killers haven't controlled the cramps.

I started northisterone Sunday am and GP said it takes 3 days to work - so if by weds night it hasn't stopped I'm back on the phone in Thursday!

This is debilitating and like you say it can't be accepted it keeps me off work. For a start it risks me keeping my job which right now is a greater problem as unemployment is already increasing.

I'm not familiar with these drugs, but I would rather have a coil than have to take multiple drugs per day to keep my body from bleeding this excessively.

Nikhedonia · 02/11/2020 22:32

Sorry, pressed post too quickly.

I really hope it subsided, OP. It really is worth being persistent.

I had a coil! It came out Friday night with the severe bleeding. They want to fit another one.

They have no appointments to the new year at the earliest.

I'd phone the doctors. Again, and again, and again. This is not an OK way to live and there are things that can be done. Unfortunately you need to keep on pestering them. It sounds really miserable and really untenable. Hope it gets fixed.

itsgettingweird · 03/11/2020 16:45

Much lighter bleeding at night.

Went back to work today and my boss was beilliant on phone before hand asking if I was really ok to go in. (I'm never off sick so they know if I am I'm ill)

Back to work interview I was told I didn't have to give details but I said I feel happy to share. She was lovely. Registered I'd need time off for future appointments and that I may be unwell again and need further time off.

I feel that at least of work realise this is something that's being treated but I can't control if I am off in future they cannot really go through disaplinary procedure because I have a condition.

Oh and I worked fine. Tampon in (pad as well just in case!) and changed it at lunchtime and took it out when I got home.

That was more than adequate. In fact managing each shift without flooding is quite light for me!

Would you try a moon cup? You might be able to give a more accurate record of blood loss then

DrDavidBanner · 03/11/2020 17:23

Every time I read a thread like this I feel such rage. I was in your situation for years, I always had problems from puberty until I had my son, a few years of "normal" periods and then heavy, long painful periods will hardly a break in between. I went back and forth to my surgery and none of the doctors were interested (its a triage surgery so you never see the same GP twice) until I was seen by a student Dr with what I thought was a water infection.

He did a thorough examination and then gave me a look you never want to see from a doctor. To cut a long story short my uterus was so full of fibroids that my only option was a hysterectomy. 5 years and early menopause later I'm feeling much better, but it was such a battle.

Another PP mentioned squeaky wheels and I have to agree, IME GPs really don't care about gynecological issues and just don't take them seriously but this is affecting your health and day to day life.

For £100 or so it might be worth having a private consultation.
