I need help regarding my teeth (crowns)

Sorry about this. I started another thread about this but worded it badly.

I have crowns at the front of my mouth. There are six of them and they have been there for about 15 years.

Two of them right at the front have slowly, over time , outwardly moved and one more than the other. I feel a bit like Nanny Mcphee. Two at the side have become loose and I am afraid to eat with them in case they drop out and the gums between them all are dark and unattractive.

Does anyone know if I can get them reset ? The crowns themselves are fine. I have a history of bad teeth hence the crowns and have been living like this for ages not knowing what to do.

These days I don't like to smile, and think it's only a matter of time before I have to get false teeth, which I dread even thinking about.
Help !

Yes they can cement them back in just don't swallow them if they fall out (like my mum didGrin)

Thank you. You have no idea how much better I feel reading this :)

The only thing now is will it hurt when they take them off - obviously not the loose ones but the others especially given where they are right at the front of my mouth.. I always said I would rather give birth than visit the dentist :(

Easier said than done, but you need to find a better dentist then.

The movement and dark spaces sound like it is due to gum disease rather than the crowns themselves moving, you really need a full check up and x rays to determine this. Crowns can fall off and then can sometimes be recemented but they can’t be taken off and the same ones repositioned to give straighter looking teeth. Sorry not as reassuring but the sooner you get seen by a dentist the sooner you can start treatment to get your smile back to how you want it. Good luck.

It really depends why they are loose. A crown thats fallen off can be recemented but if theres decay underneath then it cant. If the tooth has gum disease then I wouldnt recement a crown either. Teeth that have moved cant be reset either. A crown thats been loose for a while will likely have decay underneath, and depending on the extent might not be saveable

The obvious solution would have been to visit a dentist. Theres nothing people on MN can tell you without actually seeing the teeth, taking x-rays, charting your gums etc.

Everyone needs regilar check ups, but especially if you have 6 crowns on your front teeth, this was inevitable tbh. You need to get in and see a dentist, make a plan and then stick to regular check ups. Theres no point recrowning the teeth if you arent going to have check ups because this will just happen again.

To take them off you will be numbed up so it wont hurt but there maybe drilling involved. But that might not be a good solution. I really dont want to get your hopes up that these are going to just be removed and reset because I dont think thats going to happen.

itsgettingcoldoutside · 01/11/2020 15:10

I sympathise op. I want to have mine done but I am too scared. However it has affected my confidence so much, so I guess no pain no gain. Grin

Heatherjayne1972 · 01/11/2020 15:15

You need to have a chat with your dentist. There might be other issues going on with your gums or the crowns might just need replacing
Yes they can be re cemented/ reset/ replaced but there may be other options/ treatments available
I’d imagine X-rays are needed. But certainly have a check up and discuss

I have recently had work done, am waiting to be fitted with two new crowns. The dentist probably needs to xray your teeth first to see what the roots are like. I find the worst part of dentist treatment is the sucky thing they put in your mouth to collect saliva and any bits of filling.
The anaesthetic injections are so quick and thorough you don't feel any pain, or at least I haven't. But treatment will depend on the state of the tooth roots I think. Get that checked first.

I've had three crowns and a bridge at the front top since 1992. This panics me at times as I thought they were only meant to last about 10 years! Can any dentist tell me if this is normal!

DanceThen · 01/11/2020 16:04

If you take good care of them @lepetitpiggy theres absolutely no reason
crowns cant last that long. And I wouldnt go replacing an old crown thats still sound for the sake of it

Im assuming your dentist checks them and xrays them regularly so if there are any issues they will be picked up early

Lepetitpiggy · 01/11/2020 16:16

I've not been to the dentist for a while but yep, always have checks and x rays. That's really good to know! Thank you

Anordinarymum · 02/11/2020 16:27

Thank to all for the advice. I had straight teeth and the crowns looked exactly like my old teeth but over time have moved slightly and this is why I wondered if they could be taken out and reset as before.

I have seen the dentist, and do look after my mouth. It's only the crowns where the gums look dark.

I'll book an appointment but just wanted advice on here as a marker.

Thanks

Good luck getting an appointment, we had ours cancelled in April and when I called recently was told they aren’t seeing anything other than emergencies until next year Confused
