I'd like to look after my skin better. It is quite dry on my face and can be sensitive.

I don't know what I should be using. Cleansers, moisturiser, masks? Do you do it morning or night or occasionally?

I use products by Lush and The Ordinary
I wet my face with warm water then use Lush Angels with Bare skin cleanser. Rub in then wash off.
Tea tree toner by lush.
Then I use a hydration solution by the ordinary or rotate it with their blemish solution.
And finally moisturise using Lush's enzymion.

I also do a mask weekly

Lush are very helpful at advising skin products

Day:
Esfolio egg cleanser
Mamonde rose toner
Beauty of Joseon repair serum
Laneige essential balancing emulsion
Yuja niacin melanin inhibiting gel
La mer face crème
Laneige sun cream spf50 PA++++
Lanige sun stick (reapply every 2 hours)

Night:
La mer cleansing oil
Esfolio egg cleanser
Mamonde rose toner
Estée Lauder repair serum
Laneige essential balancing emulsion
La mer crème
Laneige water sleeping mask
Laneige lip sleeping mask

I also use the Cellreturn Led lamp mask platinum device every other day.
I'm in my 40s and I have never had a single wrinkle at all.

I always described my skin as dry but turns out it was actually dehydrated. It may be that yours is both or just one or the other but might be worth looking at the difference incase it helps?

If I can be bothered I use:

AM
Cleanse: body shop vit e
Tone: pyunkang yul essence
Vit C: Sunday Riley CEO glow
Mist: Jordan Samuel hydrate mist
Hyaluronic acid: Hado Labo premium
Moisturiser: neutrogena hydro boost
Eye cream: Sunday Riley auto correct
Sunscreen: spf50

PM:
1st cleanse: Jordan Samuel aftershow or bareminerals oil obsessed
2nd cleanse: Kate Somerville goat milk
Tone: the ordinary lactic acid
Mist: as above
Eye cream: Kate Somerville goat milk
Oil: Sunday Riley Juno/Zelens power D
Moisturiser: bareminerals
(Or sometimes an overnight mask instead of oil and moisturiser)

Other people would undoubtedly do a different combination and/or order but I've found this works for me.

I'm loving your skin care routine. But God, that will take me an hour to do! Morning and Night!

Ohdoleavemealone · 01/11/2020 09:02

Thanks ladies. I don't think I have time for anything that in depth. It must take hours to get ready!

Body shop vit e range is great for dry skin. Not too expensive either. Cleanse, tone and moisturise twice a day.

AvoidingRealHumans · 01/11/2020 09:37

The basics are cleanse, tone and moisturise twice a day. These don't need to be high end, expensive products.
Once you've got the hang of that you can look at serums, acids if you wish too.

Ohdoleavemealone · 01/11/2020 09:46

@AvoidingRealHumans Thank you.

In the mornings:
The Inkey List salicylic acid cleanser
The Inkey List niacinamide serum (good for oil control and blemishes)
PURE day cream (from M&S)
Mimitika SPF 50

Then in the evening:
Cleanse with Simple oil cleanser
Second cleanse with The Inkey List salicylic cleanser
Prescription strength serum from Dermatica online, which has retinol, niacinamide and clarithromycin
Then a basic night cream (currently using a Superdrug one)

I should probably put in a toner after cleansing for extra hydration, I did used to, but never ended up replacing it. Also, possibly shouldn’t use salicylic acid products alongside retinol, but my skin seems to be fine with it.

The Dermatica serum is a subscription-type service where you are prescribed a serum tailored to your skincare needs by a dermatologist, once you have submitted a questionnaire and pictures of your skin. I’m in my second month now, I requested something for anti-aging and acne It takes a while for your skin to show the difference a good routine is having, but I think I am starting to see some mild improvements.

But yes, as someone above said, the basics of cleansing, toning and moisturising are where to start. It is also now recommended that if you’re wanting to focus on anti-aging, you wear SPF 50 every day, even if you’re not going outdoors or it’s not especially sunny! Once the basics are established, you can add in some extras if you choose to. No need for super expensive products, there are loads of good, inexpensive brands out there!

Also, do you wear makeup? If so, “double cleansing” in the evening is recommended. As it sounds, cleansing twice. Lots of people do the first cleanse with an oil, which removes all the make up and grime, then a second cleanse with a gel or cream cleanser.

Ohdoleavemealone · 01/11/2020 10:39

I do wear makeup yes.

Any recommendations for reasonably priced basic care stuff?

@pigletpie2177 dehydrated is a very good description of how it feels yes!

Ohdoleavemealone · 01/11/2020 10:57

I am looking at boots and not sure whether to go for the No7 stuff or the simple range.

Is No7 worth the extra £6/7?

SconNotScone · 01/11/2020 12:56

How old are you @Ohdoleavemealone if you don’t mind me asking? Other than the dryness, is there anything else you’d like to target?

Ohdoleavemealone · 01/11/2020 13:04

I’m 31. I have dark circles under my eyes which I would like to tackle.

OP posts:
AlexandraPeppernose · 01/11/2020 13:35

AM
Nutrogena grapefruit fash wash (in shower)
Hydroluric acid - the ordinary
Vit C Serum - balance

PM
Either squalene cleanser - the ordinary or lancome gel cleanser
Hydroluric acid - the ordinary
2% retonoid - the ordinary
Clinique hydroboost
Any cream moisturiser on hand.

It sounds like a lot but takes all of five minutes. It has improved my dry skin immensely and reduced my severe milia under my eyes

Sheknowsaboutme · 01/11/2020 13:40

Wash with foaming cleanser once a week.

Nivea eye makeup remover and micellar water every night. And superdrug glycolic acid toner.

Then coconut oul and nivea blue and an eye cream.

For years ive struggled with eczema, dry flaky skin. And im 46. Since ive been using the above combination ive not had a breakout. My skin has never been so clear, never get spots, its the best.

Sheknowsaboutme · 01/11/2020 13:43

Superdrug have a nice hyaluronic acid drops. £6 i think and i love it. I also use it on My hands.

Ohdoleavemealone · 01/11/2020 14:06

@Sheknowsaboutme what do the acid drops do?

OP posts:
ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 01/11/2020 14:06

At night i use Pure vitamin E oil I massage this is and lightly pinch my face to stimulate circulation.
Look up gentle eyes massaging this helps I also sometimes use a jade face massage roller

Toner always witch hazel but only areas that are a little greasy

The rest whatever is on offer but free of perfume and for dry skin my day moisturiser always is for hydrated skin I’m using Simple at the moment

Late 40’s have very few lines

You do not need expensive products and over cleansing will dry your face

Also helps are genetics and I’ve never smoked

I have very dry skin on my body and use Aveeno for very dry skin it’s the best Body cream I have used and will use on my face too if I’ve run out of moisturiser.

Coconut oil Is great for dry skin patches

Sheknowsaboutme · 01/11/2020 14:20

Oh for goodness sake some of these routines are bonkers!

I just use a cleansing lotion to take off my make up, basically whatever's on offer, but currently a L'Oréal one massaged in and tissued off or sometimes use a clean muslin which also acts as an exfoliator.

Toner to finish - at the moment a rose one from my local chemist.

I use a serum at night as I personally don't like the feel of nightcream. The one I'm using at the moment is from Aldi.

In the morning a quick sweep of toner and then a day cream.

You really don't need lots of product/steps in your routine. You also don't need to spend £££££.

If you don't wear make up you could use a face wash instead of a cleansing lotion.

Micelles water can be drying in my experience, so can those all in one wipes (they are also bad for the environment)

If your skin is dry do you have enough healthy fats in your diet, like oily fish/avocado, do you have enough vitamins AC and E, do you drink enough water?

Late nights, caffeine, alcohol and junk food can also make the skin dull/dry.

Thank you. I have been and bought some basic stuff on offer to get me started.

As to enough water, healthy fats etc. No. I'm not a big drinker, don't smoke, I do exercise etc but day to day I don't think about what I consume and am often dehydrated. I really want to invest in myself more but time is short and I am too tired most days although I think energy levels would be better if I looked after myself more.

SconNotScone · 01/11/2020 17:02

Ok, in your shoes I would keep the routine the same for morning and evening, except with a second cleanse in the evening to get rid of all the make up. I would use a gentler cream or gel cleanser (an oil cleanser first at night, massaged into dry face, then warm water to melt away the oil, followed by the gel/cream cleanser). Next a toner or hyaluronic acid for hydration. Then a caffeine serum dotted around the eyes for the dark circles, followed by a moisturiser.

Lots of people use products by The Ordinary, as they are very reasonably priced, however they can completely bamboozle you with the extensive product selection, many of which god knows what they’re supposed to do!

I like The Inkey List products, which you can get on sites like Look Fantastic, or Cult Beauty. They are well priced and not quite so baffling in terms of ingredients/product selection.

Ohdoleavemealone · 01/11/2020 17:46

Thank you @SconNotScone I have been and bought some products. That order is very helpful. I had no idea which way round to do it!
