Weird inheritance

DodgyInheritance · 31/10/2020 22:05

I’ve recently inherited the entire estate of my uncle. He wasn’t someone I knew particularly well, him and my dad never really got on but I was his closest relative so for whatever reason he left everything to me.

It’s an incredible help financially and totally unexpected so I’m obviously massively grateful. Only issue is that he was an utter racist and his house holds an awful lot of Nazi memorabilia. Bags and bags of coins, original 1930’s books and some medals. Having had a look on EBay none of it seems particularly rare - the coins seem to go for about £10 each and books and medals about £30-£50. In total I’d guess it’s about £700 worth of stuff.

But - I don’t want to sell this to people who collect Nazi memorabilia as they’re obviously bastards. Equally none of it seems rare enough for any museum to be interested in it. Even if I donated to a charity shop it would still end up being sold to weird Nazi collectors. But then if I don’t sell it and I suddenly drop dead and people find I’ve got an attic full of Nazi stuff they’ll think I’m a psycho.

Any suggestions? The money isn’t an issue as there’s plenty of non racist stuff in the house I can sell, it’s just this stuff that I’m concerned about.

If not a museum, would any uni history departments have any use for this type of stuff?

Arthersleep · 31/10/2020 22:57

Could you contact a Jewish historical organisation and ask for their advice? It could possibly be used as educational material. Or, could it be sold anyway and the money donated to a good cause?

BlueThistles · 31/10/2020 22:57

I agree... a Museum would love this stuff ..

sorry to hear about your uncle OP Flowers

Haffdonga · 31/10/2020 22:58

What about selling it (say on ebay) but making sure you state that all profits from the sale will be donated to charities or causes that racist bastards would disapprove of like Refugee Action or Black Lives Matter?

cheesemongery · 31/10/2020 22:58

Definitely museum - if you bin or tip it, it will only end up getting sold anyway. It should be put to some educational use.

Theaspidistraiswilting · 31/10/2020 23:02

Yes, Eden camp'

nicky7654 · 31/10/2020 23:04

My step sons collect world war 1 and 2. Memorabilia including German helmets and weapons. They are not horrible or racist but love history.

'But then if I don’t sell it and I suddenly drop dead and people find I’ve got an attic full of Nazi stuff they’ll think I’m a psycho.'
Pmsl at this. But I think there is a case of keeping it in the attic until you can find a suitable home for them.

Store in boxes labelled 'weird uncle oswald's weird stuff', to guard against potential posthumous sullying of your own reputation.
DodgyInheritance · 31/10/2020 23:26

I think the Holocaust Museum is probably the best bet. I’m sure they’d find a place for it that wouldn’t weigh on my conscience.

Whatever you decide to do, can I suggest if you do make any money in how you dispose of it that you perhaps donate to an anti-racism or equality rights organisation?

Definitely one in the eye for racist uncle then

KenzoBaby · 31/10/2020 23:37

Don't bin it. These things are essentially evidence of crimes. Maybe a university? Or an antiques dealer could have suggestions? Meantime store with a note "not my stuff!"

LuluJakey1 · 31/10/2020 23:37

Many people collect historical memorabilia and artefacts from all kinds of periods and events - not because they sympathise with it but because they are interested in history and historical evidence. Museums are a good idea.

PaulJHollywood · 31/10/2020 23:42

I'd be very interested in taking all those items off your hands, OP. Do you like cake?

JingsMahBucket · 01/11/2020 03:35

@Student133
Whatever the views of your uncle (being a racist is not necessarily the same as being a Nazi)

What the fucking fuck?? Yes it is!!

MountainPeakGeek · 01/11/2020 03:59

JingsMahBucket

Ermmm, no, it really isn't. Both are abhorrent, but I really don't think racist Jewish people can be categorised as Nazis. Confused

thosetalesofunexpected · 01/11/2020 04:34

Hi Op I come from a British Afro -Caribbean family heritage background
Don't Put it in bin for landfill or Burn creating releasing toxic Carcenginic (cancer causing chemicals into environment, (what a stupid idea !
If I was you I would explore the idea of finding small and larger museums who would happy to accept them for educational reasons.
Also would schools and or colleges or universisty' in uk or even abroad in world, would any of these educational places be interested in some or all, or as much as possible in your uncles Nazi collection.
The reason why I am saying this I think its important people don't forget the horrible stuff of history such as eugenics and Nazi Germany as history has insidious way of repeating itself,
A few weeks I went into a local shop in my town centre in s.wales uk, that collects and solds old stuff quite interesting shop as shops/Auctions places this are they had replica 2 world war uniforms ,old coins from era and other eras and military weapons such as 19 century swords,
My son was naturally wary of going into this store first as one of staff there who restores old furniture looked like a cross between a Night club bouncer UKIP MP my son thought he would get headwork cause of our ethnicity, but I have been in this shop a few times seen stuff like old fashioned grammaphones, traditional made teeddie bears locally made, a medieval soldier body Armour replica one etc.
My childrens grandfather was in the 2 world war so my son found it quite interesting, seeing old coins from era and Replica world war 2 uniforms and the helmets of that era and German officers replica uniforms, we went to Auction place converted old chapel to see other olde worlde stuff, but my son found that other shop selling 2nd world war stuff fascniting, I suspose its bit/partly Grandfather connection to that war time era.

Don't throw that kind of stuff Away
As even though it was evil time we need to have this stuff on view in museums, other educational places for future generations and historians too.
I am currently reading a book about the Nazi secret police state that I had from oxfarm shop, its a good book shop in swansea , all kinds of interesting good books, from academic to popular books.

AlwaysCheddar · 01/11/2020 06:09

Please don’t him it, give it to a museum.

AlwaysCheddar · 01/11/2020 06:09

Bin - don’t bin it

DinosApple · 01/11/2020 07:00

Could you get your local auction house to value and sell them, and give the money to a (Jewish/holocaust?) charity.
They could put a message in the catalogue saying that. It would put off any neo Nazis from purchasing, whilst giving any interested historian a chance to buy the artefacts.

justilou1 · 01/11/2020 07:14

How about contacting somewhere like auschwitz.org/en/donate/ and asking who they would recommend might like to take it off your hands? Let them know that you are aware that this is quite a valuable haul of Nazi memorabilia, but this is not something your conscience would allow you to benefit from.

MimiLeBonk · 01/11/2020 07:18

Museum- good or bad, it's history and should be displayed to educate!

No it isn't. Do some reading and open your mind a bit.

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 01/11/2020 07:52

Sell it to whoever wants it whatever the reason and donate the money to the Black Lives Matter charity. It’s a good cause and would be a fuck you to the racists and kind of pay the karma back if you believe in that.

lljkk · 01/11/2020 08:02

I'd look into selling it with 100% profits going to stated charities. The more anti-racist the charities the better. Not every buyer is a zealot. Some people are fascinated by history without agreeing with the horrible things that happened.
