Thought you all might enjoy some pics of the carpet my landlord is insisting I keep in storage

So he can relay when I leave. I’ve lived with this for 8 years. Finally had enough and scrimped and saved to pay for carpet to be laid.

He was fine with this until I told him carpet would be coming with me when I leave. Which is when he text to say I’m to store the old carpet in the loft so he can relay it when we leave.

It’s not even stuck down, about an inch away from all the walls and the kids constantly trip over the ages.

Just a bit of brevity in these delightful times 😬🤦‍♀️

I feel your pain...I lost some of my deposit because they claimed the carpets needed cleaning. This was the carpet you could see the floor boards though. They were thread bare and embarrassing.

Make sure you do take the carpet you paid for when you go. The LL is a tight git.

I can't believe you want to take the new carpet with you when you leave .... why? Are you tracking the underlay too? If you didn't purchase decent underlay the carpet will be in a poor state when you leave and not worth taking. Are you intending on renting anther place with the same size rooms????

We had this in a student let years ago. Think we split the difference to have the carpet professionally cleaned. Which I very much doubt happened.

Sounds like your landlord went to the same school of landlording as mine. I've got built in cupboards full of tins of paint/pld used floor tiles/random shit because it might be useful. I've been here 10+ years and never needed any of it!

@KeepHimJolene I get the feeling the OP spent eight years trying to get the landlord to lay a decent carpet; in the end she had to do it herself.

On point of principle, too bloody right I'd be taking it with me when I leave!

Like fuck am I leaving him carpet he didn’t pay for. Why the hell would I leave it here? I pay £1115 for the privilege of walking on that damp threadbare “carpet”

I would take it with me even if I chucked it on a skip. Why should the LL, the tight git, get the benefit?

Rented a house with a locked cupboard in the kitchen of landlords tatty saucepans/crockery. They accidentally left the key so i emptied it into boxes in the garage where they also stored loads of old furniture. Inventory listed every item in the house including the decorative plaster leaves on the ceiling, noting that one was missing. Nutters, went to America made a fortune and staid there, never relet the place after we left.

Will he buy it from you when you leave? That's what are landlord did as we replaced a really manky one which was there when we moved in. He didn't pay the full cost but we came to an arrangement which suited us both.

Wow! I’m a ll. i replaced the downstairs, stairs and landing carpet with long term tenants in situ last year and am doing the bedrooms / bathroom (Lino) this year - am waiting for them to give the go ahead for that one. It was too difficult to do in one go eith 2 young kids.

Those carpets are vile. Is the ll going to expect you to relay them before you leave? You’d probably be better to negotiate selling the new carpets to the ll. I get your reluctance. It’s disgusting. I would never expect tenants to pay to replace carpets. Those are filthy!

In one house we rented the stair carpet was worn so thin it was dangerous as it was so slippery. We pointed it out to the LL day we moved in and he agreed to add it to the inventory- he then did fuck all about it. We moved out 12 months later and an American family moved in, they pointed out the worn stair carpet and again he agreed it was dangerous but didn’t replace it. The mum slipped down the stairs on that carpet, broke her arm and sued him!! It cost the tight arsed bastard more in compensation than it would have done to buy a new carpet.

Absolutely disgusting OP. I cannot stand what landlords get away with when tenants have to jump through hoops to rent their horrid, grotty properties.

I moved once and started getting really ill, having problems with breathing and my chest, and couldn’t work out why. Always thought the massive wardrobe in my room was in a weird place but didn’t think much of it. After a few months I decided to move it and discovered the entire wall was covering in black mould and had actual full-size mushrooms growing out of the walls. Landlord said it was my fault for not keeping the windows open 24/7 in northern England in January. I hated him.

I didn’t know there was a seven year rule. Do mattresses have to go every seven years? My three beds haven’t been changed for 12.

My landlord hasn't even given us carpet. It's hard wood flooring throughout! Enjoy your new carpet!

The seven year rule is more of a guide and presumes the item is pretty much worthless after that period of time rather than having to be replaced after 7 years. It’s more used for damage / compensation. It’s a bit more complicated as it’s a guideline.

Are you renting the loft? If so I would tell the landlord it's already full of your own things and there's no room for his carpet. he can store it someplace else.

My last rental house was bare floorboards throughout, the only carpet was hall / stairs / landing. They'd been varnished so looked ok but fuck me, that house was so cold and draughty. We paid to have the box room carpeted when we had DD so she wouldn't have a draughty nursery.

Dreadful for the poor tenant who broke her arm, but I’m bloody glad she sued!

We had similar in our last rental- carpet on the stairs so slippy that DH fell down while holding newborn dd. It was actually shiny and wasn’t even stuck to the stair treads properly.

I was furious and the letting agent seemed to think it was mildly amusing. He said he would approach the LL to see if he fancied getting it replaced. I said that wasn’t good enough, and next time there was a fall, I would be claiming against his landlord’s insurance. They replaced it the following week.
