A different way of living

I've always lived in houses with an upstairs. Our house is big. It was bought when all of them lived at home and I am still here. At present only one of my children is still living at home but when she leaves I will be selling up and buying something completely different.

We stayed in an open plan lodge for half term. It was fantastic. I want one and I want it NOW. No stairs.. oh joy :) But not only that you could watch TV and keep the 'chef/cook' company. It was lovely.

What about you? What's your dream home ??

@Mosaic123

We looked really hard for a bungalow but settled for a largish flat (1550 sq feet) in the end. There's a decently sized balcony too.
I am actively looking now. I spend hours on rightmove looking at bungalows. I have definitely got the bug :)

I am not keen on the idea of a flat because of service charges. I would not rule it out completely though since it seems to me all the best bungalows get demolished and rebuilt as one/two houses

I'd like a huge amount of overgrown land and a tiny stone cottage in the middle of nowhere.

Rather than a Victorian townhouse with a long narrow garden five minutes walk from the station.

Anywhere with a jetty for boats, verandah, and moderate isolation.

We moved in the summer into a bungalow on half an acre. There's a big sitting room with an arch through to the dining room, so it feels a bit open but the kitchen is self contained. The washing machine and dryer are in the utility room anyway, and you can only access that from outside, so it's definitely not noisy! The boundary is 10-20 feet of trees and hedgerow on three sides, so I can potter around the garden in my pyjamas and it doesn't matter, no-one can see me but the chickens, and the sheep who sometimes chat to us through the south hedgerow - they come within 20 feet of our dining table and when the patio door is open, the sudden deep baa-ing can be a bit startling. But we're only 15 minutes from town.

I fecking LOVE it.

I don't want much honestly, just a house with an office so I don't have to work in the living room and can close the door!

movingonup20 · 03/11/2020 11:03

I thought I wanted it but when we went house hunting we quickly realised we needed more space for storage than open plan allows for!

Youandmealwaysandforever · 03/11/2020 11:09

I would love a bungalow with a sea view and a private garden.
I have no problem with going upstairs but due to vertigo hate going down them. I always feel like I am going to fall and my dh uses a stair lift. Don't fancy landing on it.
As it's a wish list would also like a utility room, garage for all my dh "stuff" and a pool Grin

I had a holiday once in a barn that had been converted by people with money and exceptional taste. It was spacious, cosy and just beautiful throughout and full of Miele appliances that worked properly and I loved it. The garden was small but pretty and secluded and there were red squirrels and wild rabbits bounding around everywhere. I’d live there in a heartbeat. It is my blueprint for when I get my own house done out.

bluebird243 · 03/11/2020 11:43

I have a bungalow with a kitchen/diner and a separate lounge which suits me. I also have a wood burner and a manageable sized private garden, large garage and large driveway.

I love it and probably won't move again as it has everything I need and near all amenities. I would like to be a bit more rural, a bit more countryside around me but this will do.

Bungalows sometimes get a bad press as being just for old people/old fashioned. So wrong, it's a great way to live for all ages.

Ariela · 03/11/2020 12:49

I lived in a bungalow and put on weight I'm sure due to not going up and down stairs. I love views, so not having an upstairs is a no-no for me.
Unless it's a bungalow on a hill, with a view!

Ariela · 03/11/2020 12:52

@AHippoNamedBooBooButt
My parents have a downstairs hoover and an upstairs hoover. No carrying of hoovers on stairs!
