Contact Lenses

I wear glasses (varifocals) now but am having issues with them fogging due to wearing a mask and can’t seem to find a way to effectively solve this. If you wear contacts can you tell me how easy you find them to use? What do they cost? Anything else I should know?

I've worn them nearly every day for the past 15 years. I've never had one problem, it's just second nature now to wake up and pop them in. I wear them about 15 hours a day. I pay about £20 something per month with Boots xx

Iamaweirdone · 31/10/2020 18:32

@CoronaIsWatching I’m feeling a bit squeamish about putting something in my eye. Is it something you get over quite quickly? Do you get your lenses delivered? And do you have a ‘day off’ regularly and wear glasses? Sorry for all the questions

I have multifocal lenses and am a huge fan. I hate wearing glasses and multifocal lenses mean I never have to wear glasses.

Initially I was a bit of a dunce at putting them in and taking them out, I had about 3 training sessions at the optician first, but it was worth persevering.

I get mine delivered (Specsavers) and I never have a lens free day. I do sometimes delay putting them in on the weekend.

hollyandkit · 31/10/2020 18:35

I've been wearing them since I was 12 - I'm 47 now and never had any problems. Putting them in and out soon becomes second nature, just a bit fiddly to start with.

HeartZone · 31/10/2020 18:35

My tip is to put them in and remove using a magnifying mirror, it really helps me.
I wear mine around three days a week, I find my eyes get tired but I much prefer them to wearing glasses.

StillWeRise · 31/10/2020 18:35

i have worn them for more than 40 years!
I started with old fashioned hard lenses and it took real dedication to get used to them. I'm told the soft ones are much easier.
However, I have been told (and read) several times that gas permeable (ie hard) ones are much better for the health of your eyes.
If you have varifocals you will need reading glasses as well, I just buy numerous pairs of cheap supermarket ones.
Take my advice and don't let the optician talk you into bifocal contact lenses etc.

ScottishStottie · 31/10/2020 18:37

I pay about 15 a month for monthly lenses, worn them for the last 20 years. Put them in first thing in the morning, take them out last thing at night. Atm i dont even know where my glasses are, but if they are around ill sometimes wear them for an hour in the morning at weekends. Currently have a massive backlog as i tend to wear them longer than a month, i change them when they start to feel a bit dry which is normally at least a month and a half.

Never had a single issue with them.

DonaldTrumpsChopper · 31/10/2020 18:37

I wear multi focal lenses. No need for reading glasses. I'm so used to them, I don't even notice them.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 31/10/2020 18:39

I’ve worn them every day since I was 16.
They are really easy, and I get them delivered by specsavers. Mine are slightly more expensive because I have special lenses for astigmatism

You’ll get used to putting them in really quickly, just wash your hands first and make sure you haven’t got any soap left on your hands.

And you never have to actually touch your eye.. you touch the lens, and the lens touches your eye.

Iwantmychairback · 31/10/2020 18:43

I almost fainted when I went for a contact lens trial Blush
I have now worn them for almost 30 years. Just about to trial verification ones, so interested in knowing why not @StillWeRise?

EerilyDeleted · 31/10/2020 18:45

I've been wearing them full time for 35 years, bar the odd day in glasses at weekends, illness etc. I found it fairly easy to get used to them.

I have one lens slightly under corrected for reading and one at full strength for distance, my eyes adjust automatically and saves me from having to use reading glasses or have multifocal lenses.

Mine are monthlies, they come in the post, £19 a month which includes twice yearly checkups (different to an eye test).

fairydustandpixies · 31/10/2020 18:45

I've worn contact lenses for 30yrs, started off with hard/gas permeable ones all day every day and in the past 5yrs soft lenses. I find soft ones much better and more comfortable. I tend to wear my glasses when at home nowadays and contacts when I'm out. Masks and glasses are pretty horrendous in my experience, they steam up and you can't see. I order mine online, I buy the ones that you wear for a month and get three months worth at a time for about £20. They're worth trying OP, yes, they're odd to start with but you soon get used to them.

Chasingsquirrels · 31/10/2020 18:45

I've had them since I was 13, now have daily disposables. Find them very easy. I pay £28pm atm, for 30 pairs a month, 1 normal & 1 toric for an astigmatism. With Specsavers.

Due to deteriorating near vision I am currently trailing monu-vision (normal prescription in one eye and lesser in the other eye) to enable me to keep wearing them. They work for me and we are just fine-tuning atm.

I tried multi-focal (optician described it as circles within the lense) but I couldn't see near or far - so that was hopeless!

hobag82 · 31/10/2020 18:50

I have worn them for around 25 years. I pay £25 per month to Specsavers and have daily disposables, this also includes my yearly contact lens check, a yearly eye test and a free pair of glasses every 2 years. I very rarely wear my glasses as I have scarring behind my ears. They are delivered every 3 months. Excellent for me as I just take them out before bed and throw them away, cannot feel them at all.

someoneseatenmyapple · 31/10/2020 18:52

Unfortunately I had to give up wearing contacts when my prescription changed to needing varifocals. I tried so hard to keep wearing them but they were single vision so every time I needed to look at something close up like the food on my plate I needed over readers. I'm very shortsighted with an astigmatism so vari contacts no good for me. I hate wearing glasses.

Iamaweirdone · 31/10/2020 18:53

This is really helpful. Thank you all so much. I’m going to book a consultation with my optician as soon as I can for a trial

MissSmiley · 31/10/2020 18:54

I'm really short sighted too and wear daily disposable varifocal lenses, they are amazing

StillWeRise · 31/10/2020 18:54

LIke Chasingsquirrels I tried multi focal- hopeless and also the mono vision -also hopeless. I am extremely shortsighted, to the point where I have free eye tests and an NHS voucher for my lenses (only part of the cost) so maybe that makes it harder. I really don't find it a problem to use reading glasses.

DelurkingAJ · 31/10/2020 18:58

I’ve just gone back to them after about five years of glasses. I’d always worn soft lenses but my eyes were getting dry. The optician told me they had improved massively recently and goodness he was right. I adore wearing them again (having peripheral vision is amazing) and my eyes don’t dry out.

theluckiest · 31/10/2020 18:59

I love my contact lenses. They are like magic. Been wearing them for over 30 years with absolutely no problems. Well, apart from the one time I fell asleep wearing them. Yeah, don't do that 😆

I honestly don't feel 'dressed' without them. Get a bit tired when I've worn them all day but getting home & swapping for my glasses is like putting my slippers on.

I have an astigmatism so one toric, one not and am vvvvv short sighted so high prescriptions. I even get them sent through the post monthly.

You might find it tricky to get an appointment atm due to lockdown (I had to have my recent checkup on the phone!!) but go for it...

GoldenNCurly · 31/10/2020 18:59

I've been wearing monthly contacts for several years. I buy mine from feelgoodcontacts and can keep them in for up to seven days which is great

EerilyDeleted · 31/10/2020 19:07

I'm fine in the monovision lenses (one under corrected) with a prescription of -10 and astigmatism in one eye, so I think it does depend on the individual.

Mine are soft silicone hydrogels which you can sleep in, I don't do it routinely but it means falling asleep on the sofa or similar is not a problem at all.
