What level of home insurance do you go for?

I have a basic 3 bed detached house in a less than desirable part of town. My premium has sky rocketed on my renewal so I'm shopping around.

I'm tempted to go for the all singing all dancing policies which promise fairies and unicorns should the worst happen. But at nearly £100 a year more I'm wondering if a middle of the road policy would be better. I can't imagine claiming on my insurance if I broke my mobile phone away from the home or needing a plumber to come and fix my leaking tap at 2 am.

What is the most common, do I go for sensible cheaper option or do I go to bed poorer but safe in the knowledge I'm insured for everything!

Think of it this way - can you afford to replace whatever isn’t insured, in the event of a major fire/flood/theft/other damage etc?

I just look for the cover i want and a five star Defaqto rating.

When I sold insurance, the home emergency cover attracted no excess and didn't count as a claim. If a policy has this an option, I definitely would add it because it may not be a leaking tap at 2am but any number of inconveniences. Think it was approx £50 load on the premium but was worth it for peace of mind for my customers.

Accidents damage is worth it for some, but not for all. Totally depends on your personal circumstances. Is your bank doing appointments at the moment? Getting a policy to fully suit your needs is so worth it.

I have no idea if the banks are open. They weren't particularly helpful when we bought last year though.

I'll probably just insure us to the hilt again. No I couldn't afford to replace a house and whole contents. That's why I need adequate insurance.
