Mischief night tonight

I’m in the NW (tier 3) so in theory there shouldn’t be many people out tonight, but I’m still dreading it. I live in a supposedly ‘naice’ area, but last year it was terrible. Youths turned a car over near the town centre, smashed up a local supermarket, kicked off numerous car wing mirrors (including mine) and that was only half of it. Far worse damage caused in nearby areas. It gets worse every year and the police don’t seem to have enough officers to get it under control. Anyone else feeling worried too?

I grew up in USA where this was a thing. parents actually let you out with a bar of soap and a roll of toilet paper. What were they thinking?

Never heard if it happening near here. I’m in Surrey and lots, lots of other Americans about.

It wasn't that bad locally either. We could hear a lot of fireworks but nothing more

BlackLetterDay · 31/10/2020 17:11

Is it quite a new thing? Iv heard of it in the last few years, but wasn't a thing when I was growing up?

Mumtumwobble · 31/10/2020 17:30

I think it’s been around for quite a long time, but it’s only been criminal and dangerous in more recent years. Last year was the worst I’ve known it.

Here's a report from Merseyside Police - they seem quite happy - ." We can confirm there was a reduction in the number of calls received by the force about anti-social behaviour and criminal damage yesterday (Friday, 30 October).
A total of 1,285 calls were received during the police operation between 2pm and 11pm yesterday, down from 1373, (a 6.4% decrease) during the same period in 2019. There was a 7.7% decrease in reports of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage with 523 such reports being made compared to 567 the previous year.Commander for the policing operation, Chief Inspector Peter Clark said: “The Halloween and Bonfire Night period is a typically busy time for all emergency services, and this year we have the added element of enforcing Covid-19 restrictions. Despite a number of incidents of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage yesterday, we saw an overall decrease in calls compared with the same period last year, which is pleasing.
“We will continue to have increased patrols out and about tonight to engage with the public and ensure our communities are enjoying themselves safely, but we will continue to take swift action where criminality is concerned."
