Do you go out all day whatever the weather?

Half term has been a bit of a washout. We've been to the park in waterproof gear. Donutting on the only dry day. Cinema yesterday. Today we're at a wildlife park, very wet, all wrapped up but my face is cold and wet...I'm not loving it but I've got warm waterproof boots, a decent long waterproof coat so I'm as warm and dry as possible in this weather. DCs couldn't care less.

Do you embrace the rain or stay indoors? It's great to get out and have exercise, let the DCs burn off steam etc but I can't lie, I'm looking forward to going home later to a slow cooker bolognese and hot bath.

We have done, and probably will do more often as we can't go to many indoor places. We go to the park in the pouring rain in waterproofs and wellies and have been to National Trust places in terrible weather. I don't exactly enjoy it, but hot chocolate and cake help, so I will only go to National Trust places where the cafe has reopened if it is cold and wet. The cafe in our large park never reopened after lockdown, but they have opened a Costa over the road for drinks and cakes.

I don't think I could have dressed any better for the weather but I just feel miserable now with my cold, wet face 😂

No I don't. Though the weather is no surprise, and once children are back at school it will be sunny of course!

Bluewavescrashing · 30/10/2020 16:11

Yeah. It was worth going out, but a bit if an effort to be honest! So nice to be home now!

No way, I will do half hour or so, but longer than that and I think you’re kidding yourself if you think anyone’s enjoying it! Grin

bigchris · 30/10/2020 16:16

I love having teenagers, they like to stay in the warm!

Bluewavescrashing · 30/10/2020 16:19

My kids love being outside, they relish the rain and never complain of being cold or wet. They've had a warm bath and are happily watching a film.

DH and I didn't love it but a couple of hot coffees and decent coats made it bearable. In wet midwinter though - nope, it'll be shorter walks and more time indoors.

Do you wear a cap/ hat? I can't bear the wet face thing but a baseball cap makes those long wet days slightly more bearable as my face is drier . Didn't work so well today though as it was just wet air that sticks to any exposed skin....

Bluewavescrashing · 30/10/2020 16:24

Yes, when the rain blows in all directions you're a bit stuck aren't you? I've just ordered some winter Hygge bands to wear as a sort of snood / neck warmer / face covering. To wear in shops as I hate face masks pulling on my ears, but also for wet and windy walks! I'll just have my eyes poking out 👀😂

I'm glad to get out & glad to get back in the warm & dry.

houseofstark · 30/10/2020 16:58

I’m not a fan of being out in the cold and wet. But I’ve just recently kitted us all out in wet weather gear so we can head out this winter.

I was very concerned that if we have another lockdown or schools close, I could easily go days without getting out. And while I can manage that, the DC get a bit crazy if they’re indoors for too long!

Camomila · 30/10/2020 17:03

We do go out in the wind/rain but only for an hour or two then we come home for lunch (DC are 4.5 and 9m).

There are 2 nice parks in walking distance so thats enough to tire DS1 out.

flower11 · 30/10/2020 17:18

We are putting up with it more now, due to not much else to do. We tend to do half days if weather is bad. Out in the morning , home for lunch of soup or beans on toast. Or out for the afternoon and home for hot chocolate. My two are still young enough to enjoy puddle jumping. They moan if it's cold, but it's actually wet and mild here at the moment.

MrsMoastyToasty · 30/10/2020 17:21

I hate going out in the rain; but that's because it fogs up my spectacles.

DrCoconut · 30/10/2020 17:21

We went out yesterday. It was cold and wet. The DC were miserable and whinging to leave within 15 minutes. We left after half an hour. Not worth it. They prefer being warm and dry, like me!

Chaotic45 · 30/10/2020 17:25

I walk dogs for a living so I'm outdoors for hours and hours every single day. I love being outdoors, and mostly embrace all weathers.

Having the right clothing does make an enormous difference, as does the fact that for the most part I am waking which keeps me warm.

For me part of it is a mindset.

steppemum · 30/10/2020 17:42

I have teens and a dog.

teens stay in bed, I go for windy wet walk and come home and make us all bacon sandwhiches.

When they were little we would wrap up and go out, for an hour or two, and then come home to hot choc all round.

LER83 · 30/10/2020 17:47

I don't mind it if I'm dressed appropriately, but kids always moan! Mainly because they are cold, but I never know what sort of clothing or shoes to buy them. They've got decent waterproof, warm coats, its the bottom half they moan about! They're 10, 8 &5.

lazylinguist · 30/10/2020 17:56

No. We do go out whatever the weather, because we have a big, energetic dog that needs walking. If the weather is truly dreadful (as it often is here in Cumbria!), then dh or I will take one for the team and walk the dog on our own. If it's just a bit rainy we'll all go. But we don't go for whole days out if the weather is bad. My teen and pre-teen are more than capable of entertaining themselves in the house indefinitely. Burning off steam isn't high on their priority list tbh!

isthistoonosy · 30/10/2020 18:11

@LER83 Ours have fleece lined waterproof trousers, coats and gloves.

SimonJT · 30/10/2020 21:12

We’re out whatever the weather, its easier to dress well for cold rainy weather than it is for hot sunny weather.

RosieLemonade · 30/10/2020 21:14

We were at Legoland all day yesterday in the wet. We live so far from anywhere that we have to stick it out whatever the weather. I’m so glad I’m old enough that I dress sensibly for bad weather!

BogRollBOGOF · 30/10/2020 21:23

I try to get mine out most days or we pay for it. Admittedly after Tuesday's windswept drenching it was Thursday evening before I could face dragging them out again.
Purpose helps.

Of my own accord, I can handle 2hr runs in grim weather because the movement keeps you warm.

I have upgraded on coats this winter. Ì was thoroughly pissed off with being drenched at least twice per day just on bloody school runs last winter.
