Has anyone ever made drastic changes to save their mental and physical health?

I am really struggling at the moment. I am stuck in a job I hate and which adversely affects my mental and physical health. My children are now at university and so I no longer feel as tied to this area.
I would like to sell up and move somewhere that I could buy a home outright with a little extra to live on whilst I recover and revaluate my life. My maximum budget would be up to £200000 and that would leave me enough to live on for up to a year. I’m currently looking at Cumbria or North Yorkshire.
What do you think? Has anyone ever done anything similar? Did it work out? Do you think I would regret it and end up in an even worse position?

I’m so sorry to hear about the incredibly difficult time you have had madcatladyforever I’m so glad that things are looking up for you. PersonaNonGarter I am hoping to start counselling soon but ultimately I know that I will never be truly happy living the life I am - something does need to change.

That’s brilliant madcatladyforever! Do you mind me asking the part of the country you moved to?

Why not go the whole hog and move abroad? Here in central Portugal you can get a very liveable detached house with garden for around €80,000 - the cost of living is much lower and if you can work online you can live anywhere!

I am definitely not that brave. Although I love watching programmes where people have taken the plunge.

@haveilosttheplotthistime 2 years ago, post divorce and redundancy. All happened v quickly, and I got a great new job just after. Sometimes a good shake down changes your luck, or at least your perception of it.

Hi
After working in stressful jobs my husband and I moved to N Yorkshire rural area but access to market time walking with good amenities. I felt completely burned out at time career related.

I too felt time was passing us by. It was a big step but after a period of adjustment I know it was the right thing to do. I left my job and had a 6 week real and then found another slightly less stressful job!

Our health is much better, access to green spaces and slower ace of life outside of work is great. Made great friends in the village and would hate to have to move back to town life. But.... in hindsight I wd have rented before buying as transition a shock at first and renting gives opportunity to see if area is a good fit.

Still keep in touch with friends and family regularly from where we left.

Counselling would be a good idea as internal problems still remain if unresolved wherever you go.

If you feel this is right for you go for it our lifestyle change has been radical and we r happier and healthier. Just make sure you research thoroughly into where you want to settle before you take the leap.

Best wishes and good luck for the future OP

Great to hear it worked out for you sheepdreams. Good advice about thoroughly researching an area. Not sure if my budget would stretch to renting first - would need to be sure before I made the jump. My children may move home full time after university so ideally I would be somewhere that they would be happy to live and offered employment opportunities if necessary.
