Pathetic first world problem but I would really like a magazine subscription but struggling to find any that appeal...

I just want a magazine that interests and diverts me on the rare occasions I get enough time for a soak in the bath without a small child joining me!

My work is very intellectually intense and involves lots of reading so I don't want anything too highbrow

I don't mind a bit of fashion etc but particularly want to read about it either .

I used to quite like Marie Claire for some of the articles but that isn't in print form now?

Magazines either seem to be targeted at women in their twenties or women who like housekeeping and I am ashamed to say I have left my partying years behind but am not remotely domesticated!

Toying with the idea of National geographic or something but would ideally like more variety.

Anything I have missed that might fit the bill?!

I get a copy of Fortean Times second hand every month. It's full of strange stories and phenomenons. It's not as tin-hatty as it sounds. More historical and fun. I actually really enjoy it.

Another vote for Readers Digest - they still do it - and it covers almost everything - jokes, real life stories, finance - I love it!

@Impatientwino they are doing free trials (I think for at least a couple of months). I've not found anything yet I've fancied reading that they don't have. Also really useful is they have old copies so if you want to read eg Christmas recipes or summer clothes or whatever you can. I'm a big fan, will probably keep my subscription after the free period ends and by the time you've bought 2 magazines in a shop it's actually cheaper

I like the idea of Readly but found it annoying on my phone and am trying to spend less time on screens too.

@Caeruleanblue that's my worry about The Week too. I do read and listen to a lot of news but am looking for a subscription for relaxing time and I don't think that would quite work. Sunday Times for the supplements is a good idea actually! I stopped getting papers and magazines ages ago to save money etc but back when I was at law school I used to spend every Sunday morning reading the Sunday Times in a beautiful little cafe Grin

My library has a lot of online magazines through RBdigital. Hundreds of them, with loads of different interests and all completely free. They even check out the latest edition automatically. Are you a member of your local library?

Another vote for Psychologies.
Would like to try the Economist too
But in the hair salon where I work, the magazines everyone went for were always the 'My husband left me for an aubergine' type ones.
Not allowed magazines in the salon now Sad

I agree with the recommendations for The Economist and New Scientist (The Economist also has a very interesting podcast).

The Big Issue is also pretty varied and offers subscriptions.

NeverTwerkNaked · 29/10/2020 19:17

@Vthirtyone i tend to go for those ones in a hairdressers too Grin I think looking at photos super glamorous people is too much when I have to stare at my own reflection for an hour Grin. My hairdresser is offering a Readly login or similar when you visit at the moment which I thought was a great idea

I have too many I want to try now Grin

Inspired by the post about bilingual magazines I suddenly remembered I used to often read french magazines pre children so I have subscribed to the French edition of Marie Claire and then I think I am going to have to try /re try some of the other suggestions as well.

Olive if you're interested in food. Plenty of eating out and travel features as well as home cooking.

I also like the Sunday times travel magazine.

Laurendelight · 29/10/2020 19:39

Join your local library online and see all the magazines for free. It’s like whsmiths magazines for everyone with all the hobbies. You can choose some really different ones and ones that are not so popular to be on newsagents shelves.

NeverTwerkNaked · 29/10/2020 21:01

@Laurendelight it's a great suggestion but am looking for paper subscriptions because I spend so much of the day on screens with work now (wasn't so bad when half my day was face to face meetings!)

@NeverTwerkNaked I just thought that seeing you couldn’t decide which one to choose you could browse in your own time and find one you would like to get delivered. Tbh I too prefer a paper copy - I’m the same with books.

NeverTwerkNaked · 29/10/2020 21:08

@Laurendelight ah yes that makes sense!
