What do other nationalities think of the British

For non UK MNers, what are your general impressions of the British?

I was watching a documentary recently and a Spanish man said our houses are all dirty. I'd never heard that before but can see why someone might think that with muddy weather etc etc.

What do you think about us? Promise I won't be offended (no racism/sexism/general bigotry though please). Can't vouch for others though.

I hate no bidets too. If you got shit on hands or face you would wash not wipe with paper so no sense in not washing bum.

timeforanewstart · 29/10/2020 01:21

See in find the scottish warm and friendly not to be totally true welsh friiends of mine visited there and were treated appallingly also i have an english friend who lives in scotland who is made to feel unwelcome , but i wouldn't stereotype all scottish people to be like this and would assume they are the exception as my scottish friends that like in england are lovely people who ironically say they would never move back to scotland

And English women so sensitive about being fat! Eat lots of cake and say fat is not a choice! And if you say stop eating the cake they say are fat shaming.

timeforanewstart · 29/10/2020 01:23

@Mariola212 uk bathrooms generally not big enough for bidet but i never understand how you use them just water so no soap and what do you dry on ??

timeforanewstart · 29/10/2020 01:25

@Mariola212 i think most people are probably sensitive about others calling them fat as we would consider that not a polite thing to do

Mariola212 · 29/10/2020 01:27

Can use a tissue to dry when clean. In UK only option wet wipes. Disgusting to walk around with shitty bum!

timeforanewstart · 29/10/2020 01:27

@TechnicallyBritish i find the unhygenic cooking habits very strange as we have strict hygeine rules in the uk

Mariola212 · 29/10/2020 01:28

Yes is rude to call fat. But many women always moaning about weight and get angry when you say stop eating all the time then. 🤷‍♀️

Completmentfille · 29/10/2020 01:29

Disgusting to walk around with shitty bum!

You need to learn to wipe your arse.

timeforanewstart · 29/10/2020 01:29

@Mariola212 but water alone doesn't clean either you need soap
You wash your hands with soap and water and i have never seen a bidet in public toilets abroad and appearing less so in hotels as well in spain etc

Figsandcream · 29/10/2020 01:30

Where are you from Mariola ?

octoberfarm · 29/10/2020 01:33

English living in the US here. People are generally kinder to me because of my accent I think (perhaps just because I'm different?), but general ideas of the English/England seem to be: good humor, bad teeth, always cold/raining, reserved sometimes to the point of being cold, way more racist than we think we are, a tiny tiny country (like village sized), bizarre handling of Brexit, great NHS and awful food (which has always felt a little unfair because they clearly haven't tried chocolate digestives or apple crumbleWink). Then again, people also seem to get pretty romantic in their imaginings of London and like I said, have always been really lovely when they've found out where I'm from. It's a funny mix.

timeforanewstart · 29/10/2020 01:35

@octoberfarm racist coming from americans ??

GammyLeg · 29/10/2020 01:36

I love the British. Great sense of humour, and quietly self deprecating. And polite - I love seeing the quiet angst of a British person who is trying to tell you something uncomfortable

I don't like the obsession with class - calling people "chavs" or sneering at a name.

timeforanewstart · 29/10/2020 01:37

@GammyLeg yes its a shame class system seems to of not disappeared

timeforanewstart · 29/10/2020 01:39

@GammyLeg some of us aren't very direct i worked with a german lady and she had no problem telling you whats what

TechnicallyBritish · 29/10/2020 01:43
@TechnicallyBritish i find the unhygenic cooking habits very strange as we have strict hygeine rules in the uk
Pets in the kitchen and on counters
Pets licking off human crockery
Laundry and washing machines in the kitchen
Washing kitchen towels with other laundry
General lack of daily cleaning and in their opinion poor cleaning skills and liberal approach to what constitutes clean.
The constant mention of a home looking lived in and not wanting a sterile environment doesn't inspire much confidence.
Hosting British guests in holiday cottages means an extra day for turnover to thoroughly clean because of the general lack of respect for cleanliness and the oroperty according to a friend in a popular tourist location.

(I am also painted with the same brush- these are things I am teased about - unfortunately we seem to have a pretty bad reputation)

Goldenbear · 29/10/2020 01:46

We have a constitutional monarchy in this country- of course this, rightly or wrongly perpetuates the idea of a class system, I don't really understand why people who are not British are baffled by this.

timeforanewstart · 29/10/2020 01:46

@TechnicallyBritish and what country is this tourist spot ?
Pets on counters i hate , pets in kitchen in floor , well we don't eat of the floor
Washing machines yes be lovely if we all had utility rooms but we don't
What country are they from ?

timeforanewstart · 29/10/2020 01:49

@TechnicallyBritish never known any tourist destination that can afford a day cleaning normally about an hr turnaround both in uk and abroad
I worked in a hotel and i can say many nationalities leave it in an awful state

Mariola212 · 29/10/2020 01:54

You need to learn to wipe your arse.

But it can be dry then you go to gym and wipe again after you sweaty. Paper is bit brown. 🤮 Always wet wipes where ever I go.

Goldenbear · 29/10/2020 01:58

And I think not admitting to being English when abroad is a ludicrous idea. My married surname is Irish but I wouldn't pretend I was Irish as I don't have an Irish accent and I don't have any cultural references or geographical ones that would back me up. My DH is Jewish English very much a southerner and would equally not pretend to be Irish despite having an Irish surname.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 29/10/2020 02:03

@Mariola212

I hate no bidets too. If you got shit on hands or face you would wash not wipe with paper so no sense in not washing bum.
At a push I can see how you might get shit on your hands, but how the devil would it get onto your face? Are you acrobatic in your toilet habits?
OuiOuiKitty · 29/10/2020 02:15

Poor political decisions.

Lack of care for the poor and a 2 tier education system. I have relatives that come from a poor part of the North who have somehow managed to get all the way through the education system being unable to string an intelligible sentence together in writing. If you look through their Facebook friends they are all the same. It isn't just the lack if literacy it also the very narrow world view they have, a general lack of any education really.

I think of food banks and a government that is happy for so many of it's citizens to be fed by charities and a population that seem to see no wrong in this.

Class obsession.

Good music, TV, sense of humour, arts.
